It is in sorrow, but with grateful hearts for a life
well-lived, the family of Walter Eldon Randall announce his
peacefulpassing at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital at the age of 85
on June 15, 2024 after a brief
illness.
Walter was the husband of Helen Burgoyne
Randall. They would have been married 61 years on August 3,
2024. Besides his wife, Walter is survived by his
son Mitchell, daughters Jennifer and Mari-Lee and a daughter-in-law
Susan Scholten Randall. He is also survived by four
wonderful grandchildren whom he loved dearly, Nicholas (Catherine),
Kaley, Marlee (Matt Cripps) and Richard John III. As well he
is also survived by one brother Garnet (Ruth) Randall and several
cousins, nieces and
nephews.
Sadly Walter was predeceased by his son Graham, who
died of pancreatic cancer in 2021. Walter has suffered the
extreme grief that only a parent who has lost a child can understand
for almost three years. He was also predeceased by his
parents Arnold and Gladys Randall, two brothers Vaughan (the late
Verna) and Charles (Lorna) and parents-in-law, Roxie and Leo
Burgoyne.
Walter was an outdoor enthusiast. In his
early years he loved to ski-doo and 4 wheel. He and
neighbors Allan and Doug were very early sleders and their group soon
grew. They enjoyed many years travelling the trails of
central New Brunswick. He loved his woodlot in Upper Hanwell
where he spent a lot of his spare time. He took great pride
in his large vegetable gardens (no flowers, you can’t eat
flowers) on St. Roch, on a cleared plot at his woodlot and lastly on
Normandy Drive. Friends and neighbors always knew they could
help themselves. Many frozen veggies, pickles, salsa, fresh
tomatoes/cucumbers etc. were enjoyed by many as a result of his hard
work. He helped Helen make the first batch of pickles of
2024 on the Tuesday just prior to being admitted to the
hospital. But of all his outdoor activities none compared to
his love of his humble little cottage on Yoho Lake. It was
at Yoho that he could slow down (a bit) and just enjoy his
surroundings. Yoho Lake has always been a special place to
Walter and his family.
Walter was an active parishioner at Holy Family Church
from the ground breaking. He was one of the wild chain saw
operators helping clear the land purchased. Whenever he
could give a hand, he would especially at the church suppers and on
the cleanup days at the graveyard in
Hanwell.
A true Canadian, Walter enjoyed hockey and
curling. He never missed a game and cheered on
Fredericton’s two NHL professional farm teams in his early
days. Over the last few years with Mitchell, he was cheering
on the UNB Reds. He was so lucky to be able to
follow the Reds in this historical season. Walter also
closely followed curling. If a Brier, Scotties or Worlds
draw was on TV, no distractions were
allowed.
Most of Walter’s working career was with
Transport Terminals East Coast and the McMaster family in
Fredericton. There he spent 36 happy years working for
Carl. It was also here that he got to work with his beloved
brother Vaughan for several
years.
Walter liked to travel as long as he could
drive. In 1996, Walter and Helen along with dear friends
Ruth and Milton enjoyed a trip across Canada from Fredericton to
Vancouver Island. A few years later, he went to
Newfoundland, thus completing all the provinces. He even
somehow overcame his fear of flying and enjoyed two European trips in
2008 (England & Ireland) and 2011 (France &
Spain). Walter never forgot a face or a place. If
we could only count the number of times he excitedly
exclaimed. “We were
there!”
Walter and Helen were always fortunate to have great
friends. Over the last 40 years, the Group of Seven stands
out. Many activities and endeavors were attempted, biking, hiking,
cooking gourmet meals, picking berries, travelling, playing cards,
learning bridge with dismal results, remaining humble while becoming
famous wine makers and a lot of just plain silliness but all great
fun.
Walter always knew the importance of being a good
neighbor. He was fortunate to always experience being part
of a great neighborhood including his last home at King
West. A genuine shout-out goes to Harry Sloat and John
Peters who came to his rescue when he literally needed a “hand
up”.
Walter’s family wish to express a big thank
you to the wonderful doctors and nursing staff on 3 East at the DECH.
These folks go far beyond the highest expectations constantly working
under difficult circumstances. Walter was well cared for but most
importantly he was always treated with respect, compassion and
dignity. Bravo!
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to outreach
ministries at Holy Family Church – Poor and Needy
Fund. “What you did for the least of mine, you did for
me.” Matthew 25:40. Cheques made payable to St. Kateri Tekakwitha
Parish. Please note on the memo space the name of this fund.
Another favorite charity of Walter’s is pancreatic
cancer. Feel free to give to your favorite
charity.
A visitation and funeral mass will be held on July 17,
2024 at Holy Family Church at 1500 Hanwell Road. Visitation
will commence at 11 am followed by the funeral mass at 12
pm. A reception will follow at the church hall.
The burial will be held at 3 pm at the Saint Mary’s
cemetery, Upper Hanwell.
Shortly before going to the hospital, Walter said to
Helen, “I’m afraid our journey is over, but we have had
a great run. We are so lucky, having four wonderful children
and four beautiful grandchildren.” Helen reminded him of their
four very special godchildren. What more could a couple ask
for?
Grief Reminds us that Death is not a
“good-bye” but the longest and hardest “see ya
later”.
