It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our
Matriarch Lorna Madeline Bourgeois (Sabattis) of St. Mary’s
First Nation, on Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers
Hospital. She was 79 years old. Born in Oromocto, NB, she
was the daughter of the late Marie Sabattis and later adopted to the
late Marie and Solomon Polchies.
Lorna was a Residential School survivor, and a Day school
survivor. She was married to her loving husband of 26 years,
Alphonse Bourgeois. She dedicated her life and love to her children
and husband. She later attended the GED program and loved every minute
of it and all her classmates, especially her educators. Lorna took
great pride in learning and was so full of curiosity and passion. She
was a big believer in having fun at any age; boldly proven by her
willingness to shimmy her way to the front of the most crowded concert
venue, her latest being, Buffy St. Marie.
In her spare time, Lorna enjoyed a good bingo game, getting
to the end of a jigsaw puzzle and completing her beloved word search
books while watching Father Brown and Murder, She Wrote, and trying
her luck at pull tabs.
She was a great cook and baker and made the best molasses
cake and homemade bread around. She was also a very talented crafter
and beader. Lorna loved her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren and took great pride in her role as “Nanny
Bess”. Lorna was very social and loved life and everyone she met
on her earth walk. She made many friends in her lifetime and was very
well loved by all. In recent years, she has been a fixture in her
favorite chair by the window in Brooks court, watching the bluejays
and other birds from the picture window. Her laughter,
quick-wit and deep blue eyes will be deeply felt for years to
come.
Lorna will be dearly missed by her children; Peggy (Ted),
Bradley, Tanya, Sally, William (Billy) (Crystal); her 15
Grandchildren, 12 Great-grandchildren, and her siblings Mike, Peter
Gloria, Joanne, along with nieces and her god-daughter
Clarissa.
She was predeceased by her birth mother Marie Sabattis, her
adopted parents, Marie, Solomon Polches, her brothers Gordon, Ralph,
and her oldest child Wayne, and her god-child Eunice.
The family will receive friends and family at 15 Brooks
Court, St. Mary’s First Nation on Friday, May 17, 2024. A
funeral service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2024, at 11 am at

Brunswick, with Internment to at Saint Anthony’s
Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Maqiyahtimok
Center, 247 Maliseet Drive, St. Mary’s First
