HAINES, James “Jim”
James (Jim) Haines was born on Brunswick Street in Fredericton, March 15, 1938 to parents Eldon and Thelma (nee Clowater).
During the war, his family temporarily relocated to Edmundston, returning to Fredericton in 1947. His family moved to 57 Main Street in Nashwaaksis where his father had a garage. Jim grew up and worked with his father for several years. He married Rubye Bishop in 1960 and later joined Ashfields Limited where he was promoted to General Manager of the Bathurst branch. In 1967 he returned to Fredericton and joined Canada Life where he worked for over 30 years.
Jim liked to do volunteer work. He was a Sunday school teacher, a Cub leader, spent 15 years with the Veterans Health Wing at the Victoria Public Hospital, and then with Hospice Fredericton. He was a member and Santa’s helper with the Kinsmen Club of Nashwaaksis for many years. He was a volunteer firefighter and assistant chief with the Nashwaaksis Fire Department.
Jim was in the Canadian Army Reserve (Royal New Brunswick Regiment (Carleton & York)) when he was 18. Jim was a member of the Masonic Lodge (Royal Alexandria Lodge Number 33) for over 65 years, a member of the United Church (Main Street Nashwaaksis, Fredericton) for over 70 years, and a member of the Fredericton City Club for over 50 years.
A lifelong avid outdoorsman, Jim always enjoyed fishing and hunting and reading Robert Service.
Jim hoped to leave this world better than he found it.
Jim died peacefully at Hospice House on Monday, April 22, 2024. Jim was predeceased by sister Phillis Camp, parents Eldon and Thelma, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Jim is survived by his wife of 27 years, Hilda (nee Gillies), 2 children, Troy and Rachel, 1 stepson Stephen Scott, 4 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
