James Daniel Lohr Obituary
It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of James Daniel Lohr (AKA Big Jim) on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, at Rest Haven Care Home, Steinbach, MB.
Jim will be lovingly remembered by his wife Vera of 56 years, his children, Betty (Percy) Kaita, and Sharon (Jim) Taekema, Brad (Kathleen) Lohr, Brenda (Ken) Krentz and Jennifer (Anthony) Thiessen. Also numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, also sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
He was predeceased by his first wife Mildred, son Barton, and his parents Dan and Mary Lohr, grandson Kevin Bell, brother Gordon, and sister Myrna.
Jim spent many years as a grader operator for the Highways Department and ended his working career with the City of Steinbach as a foreman of the Public Works Department.
Jim, Brad and Bart would paint houses during summer holidays to earn extra money to go fishing at the Big Whiteshell.
Jim was famous for making farmer sausage, gritz, smoked jack fish, beef jerky and bacon. He wouldn’t stop there, he would then deliver his culinary creations to friends and neighbours.
Jim was born with a club foot but that never slowed him down. He was a very hard worker but also enjoyed camping and fishing, fishing and more fishing. He also enjoyed curling, bowling, car racing and grandchildren’s activities. And would never say no to a card game.
Jim was an active member of the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church and choir. He was a church councillor and often helped at church functions. He was also a member of the Kinsmen club and the Pat Porter Choir. After retiring from the City of Steinbach, Jim and Vera spent 17 winters in Texas, enjoying biking, playing pool, swimming, playing cards, and also enjoyed singing in the park choir and local Lutheran Church.
In his later years, Jim and Vera spent many hours at the Pat Porter Active Living Centre, where they were welcomed with open arms by staff and members. They became part of a new family, which was greatly appreciated by Jim and Vera. Jim and Vera also became die hard Steinbach Piston fans because of the Piston player’s involvement at the centre. Jim and Vera regularly attended Piston games and established relationships with the players.
Special thanks to the Rest Haven and Bethesda hospital staff for the care and love they gave Jim while he was in their facility.
If friends so desire, (in lieu of flowers) donations can be in memory of James Lohr, made to Pat Porter Active Living Center or a charity of their choice.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Steinbach, MB., with viewing one hour prior to the service. To join the family via livestream, please click HERE at the time of the service.
