It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Catherine Mary Bonnar on October 8, 2024, at the age of 81. Catherine was born on November 17, 1942, in Saline, Scotland to John and Winifred (nee Bracelin) Eadie.
Catherine and her beloved husband, Don, met as children in East Wemyss, Scotland when Catherine was just seven years old. Married on August 22, 1964, Catherine and Don were grateful to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary only seven weeks ago.
Catherine will be remembered for her unwavering determination, kindness, and devotion to her family. Whether at home, work, or in the community, she left a lasting impression on all who knew her. A dedicated homemaker, Catherine’s family benefited from her many talents, from hand-knitted sweaters and homemade clothes to her delicious cooking and baking. Catherine had many hobbies over the years. In addition to knitting and sewing, she took up floral arranging, cross-stitch, and model-making. These hobbies gave her additional ways of connecting with Clare and Colin, and eventually with her grandchildren who were the light of her life.
In 1975, Catherine and Don made a life-changing decision to immigrate to Canada. This move brought Catherine the opportunity to work outside the home as an office manager, a role that she took great pride in performing well for 25 years.
Diagnosed with cancer in 2018, Catherine faced her illness with courage and grace, determined to be part of her family’s lives for as long as possible. We couldn’t have asked for more.
Catherine is survived by her husband Donald Bonnar, her daughter, Clare (Daniel) Kalantar, her son, Colin (Lorraine Kopetzki) Bonnar, and her five grandchildren, Katrina Kalantar, Stephanie Bonnar, Andrew Bonnar, Emily Kalantar, and Megan Kalantar.
We extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. J.P. McGhie and the staff of the BC Cancer Center for their care and guidance over the past 6.5 years. We are also appreciative of the generous, compassionate and loving care Catherine received at the BC Cancer Center Hospice.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Private Funeral Mass being held on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at 2pm, at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, 740 View Street, Victoria.
While Catherine loved flowers, she loved supporting charitable causes even more. The following choices speak to her concern that others receive the same kind of care that she did in the last years of her life.
