James Campbell Obituary
James(Jim) Ernest Campbell, April 1941 – May 2024.
Jim was born in Port Elgin, Ontario on the shores of Lake Huron. He met his future wife Judy in 1964 in Mitchell Ontario, and they were wed in the fall of 1966. Seeking adventure, they moved to B.C. in 1968 settling in the small metropolis of Maple Ridge where two children arrived- Mike in ‘69, and Diane in ‘72.
Wanting a slower pace of life, Jim and family went on a road trip north looking for a better place to call home. Nothing caught their eye until they saw the beautiful Hudson Bay Mountain that was the backdrop of the little town of Smithers. They quickly found an acreage west of town, with an old cabin on it with no amenities. They set to work making the place livable, which was a monumental task, made a bit easier with the help of Jim’s brother Bob. Jim and Judy raised their family there, continuing to upgrade over the years.
Jim had many jobs over his career, but most notable was his 20 years he put in as a pick-up and delivery driver in Smithers and area for Canadian Freightways, where he earned membership into the million mile safe driver’s club! He enjoyed the hard work, but mostly enjoyed the interactions with all the customers he served with a quick smile and snappy humour.
Jim enjoyed riding motorcycles ranging from a Harley he had when he was sixteen, to a Honda Golding he bought new in 1983. He took each of his kids for a prolonged trip, Diane for an Okanagan tour, and Mike to Ontario. Jim also enjoyed the companionship of animals, always having a dog by his side. In his later years he could be heard to say “ I love animals, and they love me!”
Jim is pre-deceased by his parents Bert and Harriet Campbell, his brother Bob Campbell, sister Jean and nephew Dan Streeter of Vernon. He leaves his wife of 57 years Judy, son Mike (Amy) of Smithers, and daughter Diane (Scalise) of Calgary.
After a lengthy illness of dementia and later cancer, he passed away in his home at the Bulkley Lodge. Many thanks to staff and caregivers for their kind care. There will be a small family gathering in memorial, condolences can be made on this website.
