Keith Sorensen Obituary
It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Keith Thomas Sorensen at 89 years young. His generous heart, famous cocktails, and treasury of jokes will live on in our hearts and memory. He was a devoted husband, a loving father, and a great friend to many.
Born on September 23, 1934 in Vancouver. Keith was the first child of Norma and Clarence (Clancy) Sorensen. He received his business education at the University of B.C., followed by one year at the Culinary Institute of America, preparing him for his career in the family business of White Lunch restaurants throughout British Columbia.
In high school, Keith met Anita Hazzard his first wife and mother of his five children They were married for 23 years. In 1978 Keith married Jan Welsh and they were together for 46 wonderful years. Keith had changed careers by then and spent the rest of his working years developing High Salal Island Ranch on Hornby Island.
Over the years Keith’s family grew to twenty-seven including eleven grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
In 1984 Keith and Jan moved into their beautiful home “Eagle House” at High Salal on Hornby Island. Although Keith had built many homes worthy of magazine coverage, Eagle House was his pride and joy where they constantly entertained many world traveller friends and family. During the last years of Keith’s life, he was most comfortable and happy in a new home in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island, close to many of his offspring. The summer home on Hornby’s Tribune Bay was still only a few hours away.
Keith had diverse passions in his life including skiing, motorcycling, tennis, and music. For years he lead a multitude of his two-wheeling friends around North America. He was usually the fastest and oldest of his motorcycle crowd. Keith built his ski cabin in 1966 when Whistler Mountain first opened and kept it until recently enjoying many winters on the slopes of the now world-class resort. During his later years, he spent much of the winter at the Palm Desert Tennis Club in California improving his tennis and enjoying the sun. Music was his other love and he could be found deep in a stack of jazz, classical, and modern eclectic music from LPs to CDs and everything in between. Movies continued to be a passion right to the end, especially Westerns.
Keith is survived by his devoted wife Jan, his children Jeannie, Lori, Shelley, Eric, and Krista plus grand and great grand children. He loved, and was loved, by his family and many friends.
He is predeceased by his parents, his brother David, and grandson Jeffery.
