John Alexander “Sandy” Currie
February 13, 1981 – August 17, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the death of Sandy Currie on August 17 at 11:58 pm at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, at age 43.
Sandy was born in Duncan and lived there until he moved to Nanaimo in 2009. As a child he was intelligent and inquisitive, and loved his pets. He attended Alexander Elementary (1986-1993), Quamichan Middle School (1993-1996), and Cowichan Secondary School, graduating in 1999. At school Sandy was a know-it-all who excelled academically and competed at provincial electronics and math competitions. After graduating he took a job working as a truck driver and courier with Jeff Lundstrom, followed by a courier job with Dynamex. He ran his own company doing deliveries for Staples from 2009 to 2014, then moved on to work for TransCold Distribution as an order picker, where he developed his love of ice cream (and refrigeration science). Sandy was promoted to Lead, then Operations Manager, then General Manager for Vancouver Island. He left in 2019 to run his own logistics and distribution company, Consolidated Trading, where he distributed candy and snack products to gas stations and independent retailers on the lower island. He was very passionate about business and had many plans to expand and develop his company.
He became ill in July 2022 and was diagnosed with terminal metastatic colon cancer in March 2023. His doctor said he had one to four months to live, but thanks to his otherwise healthy body, some “amazeballs” medical science, and his strength of character, Sandy lived for another 16 months. On August 13th 2024 it was obvious that his liver had given up the ghost and he went to hospital with a clear mind and on his own two feet, and three days later he was gone.
Sandy lives on in his loving wife Sarah, mom Janice, brother Jeff Verwolf and sister-in-law Stacey Verwolf, sister Amy “Chicken” Burnside, best friend Travis Davies, and many other family members, friends, and co-workers. He is pre-deceased by his grandma Ruby, cousins Adam Fielden and Chris Biro, and friend Jeff Lundstrom.
Sandy will be remembered for his generosity, integrity, and his passion and curiosity for everything. His many interests include (but are certainly not limited to): the science of ice cream production, power mechanics, blacksmithing, politics, cheese making, gemology, metal work, sewage treatment, bee keeping, business, jewelry making, finance and economics, construction, soap making, electronics, architecture, cooking, math, engineering, jam making, biology, gardening, horology, gunsmithing, history, and HVAC systems.
Many thanks to all staff and volunteers at the palliative care unit of NRGH for their humanity, and for making his time in the hospital (for Sandy and all his visitors) as easy as possible.
