VERNA EVELYN RASICH
1932 — 2024
November 26, 1932 — August 25, 2024
Mom had three siblings: one older brother, one younger brother, and one younger sister. Mom was the last to pass of the Ernst family… the end of an era.
They grew up on their farm in Guernsey and then Watrous, Saskatchewan with their parents, Ira and Martha Ernst.
Mom was in her early twenties, a registered nurse, when she made her way to B.C. She worked at the Tranquille Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Kamloops upon her arrival.
Mom met her dashing husband, Frank Rasich, at the Memorial Arena in Kamloops where he picked her up off her feet! She had fallen trying out her new skates.
Thus began their 66-year journey together. They said their vows on March 21st, 1958. Two daughters soon arrived: Cheryl was the first, followed by Lori two years later.
Mom and Dad enjoyed a lifetime of road trips, covering every back road in B.C. Mom took photos and documented the many historic places. Her favorites were the churches of B.C.
Mom was legendary for taking pictures. She always carried two cameras! Every family celebration and holiday has been captured in one of over seventy albums. Mom spent many hours sitting in her chair by the front window, writing in the tiniest, neatest printing the dates and captions for each photo.
Mom had a rewarding 36-year career as an RN at Royal Inland Hospital in Kamloops. Many of those years were spent on the Maternity Ward. She is fondly remembered by patients whom she helped deliver their babies, and by many of her co-workers. You knew “Evie” was coming down the hall by the ‘clickity-click’ of her quick steps in her shiny white nursing shoes.
After Mom retired, she spent most of her days babysitting her grandsons: Cheryl’s three boys and then Lori’s two boys. The boys spent many days at McArthur Island riding their bikes while Mom walked beside them with her camera in hand.
She was the best at caretaking. She was always cleaning and cooking delicious family meals. She lovingly decorated her family home for every holiday occasion.
Mom touched so many lives, taking an interest in everyone she met. They mattered to her. She was a devoted mother and wife who dearly admired her “Frankie boy.”
