Eric “Pete” Elkington Obituary
Eric (Pete) Elkington passed away on August 27, 2024 at the age of 89 at his home in Golden, BC. His endurance through two strokes showed his courage in facing life’s challenges with a smile and he stayed strong until the end.
Whether out for coffee with his friends or on the afternoon drive with the love of his life, Pete loved people, Golden and life. Many a story can be told of Pete’s colourful personality, from his early days of bull riding to teaching every kid at the lake how to waterski.
Pete was born on October 18, 1934 to Gerald and Kathleen Elkington in Fernie, BC, the youngest of 4 children. After high school, Pete went to Mount Royal and UBC before joining the Air Force, where he found his niche in heavy duty equipment.
Pete met Mariam while driving highway truck through Golden and they married in 1966. Together, they ran many equipment related businesses. Pete had a work hard, play hard outlook on life and after very long work weeks, he always made time for play with golf, hockey or their daughter Tessa.
The proudest part of Pete’s life was his granddaughters, Katie and Tricia. He loved spending time with them and was always their loudest cheerleader.
Giving back to his community was also important to Pete and he did so through being active in the Shrine and Rotary.
Pete’s favorite hobby was gardening and he had a strong love for animals. A twinkle in his eye, Pete had a way of lifting spirits with silly nicknames, harmless teasing or the wild shuffle dance moves.
Pete was laid to rest at the Golden Cemetery. Rest easy, Papa. We will miss you dearly, think of you always and cherish the times we had together.
A memorial mass will be held at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Golden, BC on Saturday, September 28, 2024 at 11:00 am with Father Paul John Urimba, Celebrant.
