Laura Long Obituary
The family of Laura Sivak Long is sad to announce her death on December 10, 2023 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta. How can we possibly describe a vibrant life that ended too soon? Laura has been the warm heart of her family; Loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, niece and friend. We struggle to imagine life without her. Born in Edmonton, Alberta on April 5, 1958, her family moved several times, living in Grande Prairie and Prince George. Laura attended the University of Alberta before taking a job at the CN Credit Union in Edmonton. This is where she met her future husband, Wilf Long. After several years at the bank, Laura transitioned to the lumber industry initially working in Edmonton with Pelican Spruce, a company that eventually became Weyerhaeuser. Her work as human resources leader took her to Slave Lake from 1999 to 2007. From there she moved to Grande Prairie and retired from the mill in 2017. Unable to sit idle, Laura took on work with Encana where she made many new friends. In 2019, Laura and her husband retired to Fort Saskatchewan to live closer to their son Henry, and his family. In 2022 they settled in their new home in Wetaskiwin, becoming involved with a new community and making many friends. Laura’s passion for knitting and needlework was greatly admired by all who met her. There was always a gift tucked under a tree or wrapped in a bow that had been made by her hands. When not busy creating works of art, Laura could be found sitting on a hill enjoying folk fests in Edmonton and Grande Prairie every year. She was happily involved with the Wetaskiwin Northmount Women’s Quilting Group. Laura is survived by her husband Wilf, son Henry; daughter-in-law Allyshea and grandson Jack; sisters, Theresa ( Geoff) Ferrey; (Anne, William, Tim, Sam, Grace), Judith Sivak, Allison Sivak, and brother Jim Sivak. Her in-laws were David and Rita Long (Tom), Mary and Hans Schimanke (Jennifer, Alia), and Richard Wensink. Laura was predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Elizabeth Sivak; sister, Lisa Wensink and beloved aunt Christine. She will be greatly missed by her two closest friends Donna Edwards and Allyson Goyette and many cousins, aunts and uncles. We will remember and miss her always. We will celebrate her life as she would have wanted with a party at the social center located at 4810 Northmount Drive, Wetaskiwin on May 4, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. The family invites all who knew and loved Laura to join us. Dress casually, and bring along your stories and knitting. Be prepared to enjoy great food and music and help us laugh and remember this incredible woman. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Canadian Cancer Society to help find a cure for this disease that has taken too many.
