Eric Johanson Obituary
Eric John Johanson (1932-2024) was born in Red Deer, Alberta on September 14, 1932, and lived his entire life as a successful rancher and farmer in the Burnt Lake District. Eric passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Hospice with family by his side on February 4, 2024, at the age of 91.
He was married to his sweetheart Phyllis Johanson for 60 years. He credited Phyllis with much of his success. They raised six loving children including Kim Johanson, Holly (Ted) Albersworth, Glen (Diana) Johanson, Sharon (Kenny) Johanson, Kevin Johanson and daughter-in-law Jodi Johanson. He is also survived by his sister Fern (Lloyd) Piper and brother George (Marie) Johanson. Eric is also survived by 18 grandchildren and one great-grandson, Briggs Johanson; as well as numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Eric was pre-deceased by his parents Olga and John Johanson; siblings John (aka Jacky) Johanson, Edgar Johanson, Donavan Orlando, Olive Smith and Doris Hanson; as well as his son, Richard Johanson in 2018.
Eric had a deep love for his family and farming so much so that he never officially retired. He was a keen businessman and loved working so much that he set up his farm to be a working farm 12 months of the year. Eric knew each of his cows and could recite the linage of each cow off the top of his head. It was quite a feat when for a while he had over 600 head of well cared for purebred cattle. Eric also ran an 85 head dairy along with beef, hay, and grain farming. Later he added bison to his practice. He also had a strong faith and taught his children to love God, work hard, and act with integrity. Even into his later years Eric was known for his sharp mind, quick wit, and enjoying a good laugh. He was quite the historian and was also very willing to share a good story or his extensive farming knowledge with the younger generation. Eric was a baptized Seventh Day Adventist and claimed the Bible promise that if he kept the Sabbath, God would bless him. And God did bless Eric by multiplying his land, cattle and bison along with the blessing of a beautiful family. Eric will be deeply missed.
A Burial for Eric Johanson will be held at 12:00 p.m. at the Burnt Lake Cemetery followed by a Memorial Service at 2:00 p.m. at the Sylvan Lake Seventh-day Adventist Church on Sunday, February 18, 2024. For those unable to attend the memorial service will be live-streamed. The link will be available below, prior to service time.
