Obituary
Living a life that spanned almost a century, Albert Fierlbeck was born in the small Bavarian town of Neuhaus-am-Inn on November 10th, 1928. Having endured the hardships of war as a child, he sought a new life in western Canada, arriving in Canada on October 7th, 1954. He came to Ponoka and began work as a jeweller and watchmaker with Don Jardine. In 1958 he married Mary Kolibas, then working as a nurse at Alberta Hospital Ponoka. By 1964 Mary and Albert had bought the business and ran Lyon’s Jewellery until their retirement in 1988.
Albert had a deep interest in civic citizenship, and for years took on responsibilities including serving on the hospital board and town council. He valued good governance, sound stewardship of social resources, and the importance of holding public figures to account. He also contributed to the social fabric of the town through organizations such as the Kinsmen and the Masons.
In addition to being keenly involved in local business and politics, Albert was an enthusiastic participant in activities like competitive chess and bridge. He would drive to Edmonton to pit his wits against other chess enthusiasts, and he took on the nascent AI chess programs with gusto, finding the early versions far too easy to beat. Throughout his life he found great camaraderie with his fellow bridge players, enjoying both the intellectual and social nature of the game.
Albert loved Alberta. He enjoyed visits to friends in the rural areas, sometimes helping out during fall baling season. He appreciated the straightforward and unpretentious sensibility of central Alberta, and was never one to hold back his views when he found issues or events unfolding in the wrong direction. Indefatigably strong-willed to the very end, Albert died on October 8th, 2023. He leaves behind Mary, his wife of 65 years, his children George and Katherine (Gordon), and grandchildren Eleanor and Jack.
