Obituary
In Loving Memory of Dolly Holmes
January 30, 1954 – December 15, 2023
It is with deep sorrow that we announce the unexpected passing of Dolly Holmes at the age of 69. Surrounded by the love of her seven children and cherished loved ones, Dolly peacefully departed this world, leaving behind a legacy of love, warmth, and cherished memories.
Dolly was born in High Prairie, Alberta, but grew up in Enilda, Alberta. Her journey through life took her to various places, each leaving an imprint on her heart. From Calgary to Grande Prairie, Slave Lake to Sylvan Lake, Dolly embraced each community with open arms, making lasting connections and creating a tapestry of memories that spanned a lifetime.
Dolly was a proud and loving mother to her seven children: Denny Merrier and wife Suzanne Merrier, Priscilla Holmes, Candy Merrier, Eddie Merrier, Blain Merrier and beloved daughter-in-law and friend Amanda Merrier, Spirit Trump and Lovern Trump. Dolly’s heart swelled with love for her grandchildren: Chace Holmes, Dyvon Holmes, Shania Byer, Bret Byer, Taylor Merrier, Brittany Merrier, Chet Merrier, Jessie Degen, Seanna Degen, and her newest granddaughter on the way. Additionally, she was blessed with Great-grandchildren Osiris Holmes, Alexander Holmes, Elias Krock, Evelyn Wylie, Nathan Bjorgan, Aaliyah Stech, Jace Stech, and Aubrey Nygaard. Her big heart was not limited to humans alone; she had a special place for all her grand pets, showering them with love, treats, and affection. Dolly was one of seven siblings: Patsy Jackson, Marilyn Davis, Johnny Holmes, and Victor Holmes. She was predeceased by her mother, Evelyn Holmes, her father, Alexander Holmes, and her two brothers, Richard (Dempsey) Holmes and Roy Holmes.
Dolly found immense joy in the simple pleasures of life. A passionate bingo player, she reveled in the thrill of the game, creating cherished memories with friends and family. She was always searching for four-leaf clovers to provide her luck. Her greatest happiness, however, came from being surrounded by her children. Dolly’s home was a haven of warmth and hospitality where everyone felt welcome. Her open-door policy and genuine kindness created an environment where bonds and memories were strengthened. She had a strong belief in prayer.
Family gatherings were a source of great joy for Dolly, and she expressed her love through the art of cooking. With a generous heart and a flair for hospitality, she ensured that no one left her home hungry. Her shopping adventures were fueled by a desire to surprise her loved ones with thoughtful gifts, and her hidden pile of presents was a testament to her selfless generosity. Dolly’s love extended beyond her immediate family; she touched the lives of many with her infectious spirit and welcoming nature. Her enthusiasm for life, love for her family, and generosity will forever be remembered by those fortunate enough to have known her.
A Celebration of Dolly’s Life will be held at The Royal Canadian Legion in Sylvan Lake, Alberta, on January 27, 2024, from 2:00-5:00 pm. If you would like to make donations in Dolly’s honor, the family requests they be made for funeral expenses. Please transfer donations to merriera@outlook.com.
May she rest in peace, surrounded by the love she so freely gave others.
