Jacob Klimek passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on Tuesday, December 19, 2023 in the comfort of his own home in Sherwood Park, AB. Jake was born on June 8, 1940 in Kleinlomnitz, Czechoslovakia; he was the youngest of two children born to Samuel and Sophie Klimek. WWII brought profound challenges. His family was evicted from their home for being German, then shipped to a refugee camp, and his father was taken to a forced-labour camp where, tragically, he passed away from Typhoid. Eventually they were sponsored by a relative to come to Canada. On September 20, 1951 they immigrated to Canada on the SS Goya, arrived in Halifax, and boarded a train to Vernon, BC arriving October 9.
When Jake was in grade 8, his mom became ill and Jake happily quit school to help support his family. He apprenticed as a mechanic, quickly excelling and earning the respect of all who met him through his honesty and integrity. Eventually, he married and was blessed with three children; he always said that he didn’t know what love was until he had kids. In 1980 the family moved to Olds, AB and Jake tried his hand at chicken farming hoping to get out of Mechanics. Instead, Jake continued to work as a mechanic for a total of 50+ years AND remained a full-time farmer. Although he had an unparalleled work ethic, dedicating countless hours to his two full time jobs, every evening, no matter how exhausted he was, he spent time with the Lord. During this busy time, he was blessed with three more children. Despite his many responsibilities, he always said his most important role was being a father. He treasured the weekends, when he would take his kids to the park, a movie, and Pizza Hut.
Jake loved serving as a deacon at East Olds Baptist Church for about 30 years, until he moved to Edmonton to be in the care of his daughter and her family due to health issues. His love for the Lord was evident in the joy he had, and gave to others. Despite the many visits in and out of the hospital, he never lost his sense of humor. He loved to tell ‘dad’ jokes, and he loved to laugh at his own jokes even more! He had a great ability to make others smile: his sense of humor will be missed and his heartfelt kindness remains one of his legacies.
In his retired years, unburdened from many of his lifelong obligations, Jake truly came into his own. He nurtured friendships in his new church and new community in Sherwood Park. He left a positive impression with everyone he met. People were happy to reciprocate this goodwill to the extent that members of his family found themselves showered with it just by virtue of being connected to Jake. At bottom, Jake thrived in these days by being able to devote himself to his Christian values. He stated that his greatest job in life was to pray, and read the Word relentlessly. He put the Armor of God on daily for his work as a prayer warrior. True to his nature, his prayers included everyone he wanted to shelter under the banner of God’s love, which was virtually everyone he knew and definitely everyone he loved. Everyday. He will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends, and those left to mourn will be comforted by cherished memories of him.
He was predeceased by his sister Susanna Schalm, and was survived by his former wife Meta (Luellau) Klimek, his six children: Christine (Bertrand) Bickersteth of Calgary, AB, James (Sheila) Klimek of Crossfield, AB, Carol (Gordon) Buzikevich of Sherwood Park, AB, Matthew (Nicole) Klimek of Red Deer, AB, Candice (Jessy) Mayne of Huxley, AB, Caitlin (Landon) Becker of Medicine Hat, AB. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Paris Bickersteth, Caleb Klimek, Sophia Klimek, Josiah Klimek, Mary (Eric) Moltzahn, Jacob Buzikevich, Zachary Buzikevich, Catherine Buzikevich, Braxton Klimek, Hudson Klimek, Huxley Mayne, Blake Becker, Austin Becker, Tayva Becker.
A funeral will be held at 11:00 A.M Saturday, February 3, 2024 at East Olds Baptist Church. On-line will also be available.
