Werner Gaidosch was born March 10 1951 in Bad Ischl, Austria to Irma and Ziggy Gaidosch. Around the age of 2, the family embarked on a ship to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
In Winnipeg, Werner grew up Catholic, and his favourite person in history was God. Religion aside, Werner grew up with 3 brothers and spent his teenage years hanging around his uncle’s butcher shop, swimming at the lake, and stealing his grandfather’s car and cigarettes.
After high school, Werner moved to Calgary to attend Mount Royal College – he was in the interior design program. He arrived on his first day in a long fur coat and high-heeled boots. In the program, Werner met his best friends who would remain his best friends throughout his life. He also met the love of his life Karen. They were married in July of 1975. Karen and Werner settled on a little farm along the Elbow River (now Springbank). They welcomed Rory in 1977, and Mason followed in 1980. They had goats and bunnies and many different dogs. During this time he owned and operated a customer furniture shop in Calgary called Tree Beards. In 1989, Karen, Werner, Rory, and Mason, moved to Turner Valley. There Werner became something of a small-town legend. He endeared himself to the teenagers of the town as Rory and Mason grew up.
There was always an extra kid, or 2, or 20 at the Gaidosch’s. They had a truly open door policy. Everyone was welcome at Karen and Werner’s, and made to feel like family. He played a pivotal role to many youths’ lives during this time, and made a lasting impact. In later years Werner and Karen welcomed a daughter-in-law, Farrah, and grandkids Avery, Cooper, and Dashell. He was just embarking on his journey of endearing himself to a new generation of teenagers.
We will miss Werner’s many complexities. He “worked to live”. He loved to wear Daisy Dukes with cowboy boots. He never met a drink he didn’t like, but was especially fond of Extra Old Stock from a box sitting on the floor. Later, his taste got a little richer with Old Mill. He made his own wine too, but it never really got time to age. He loved loud rock n’ roll, his favourite being The Rolling Stones, with AC/DC being a close second. He absolutely hated “I Want You to Want Me”. He loved Drum tobacco. He loved a good fire pit, a good party, and dancing. When he ate food he enjoyed, he made suggestive sounds. He loved wood and could work absolute magic with it. He loved conspiracy theories and hated the CBC. He loved his friends and his family but was especially in awe of his grandkids. He loved to have them over after school, and hear about their day. He created and built his granddaughter the most magical bedroom a tween girl could want.
Most of the time he didn’t really get jokes and struggled to understand sarcasm. Werner hated being sick and felt as though his recent illness hindered his socialization. He’s at peace now, in heaven, playing crib, smoking, drinking scotch, and talking unhindered with his loved ones who had made the journey before him. Werner would love nothing more than if you cranked “Sympathy for the Devil” and tipped one back while cooking up a good conspiracy his honour.
Werner is survived by his love of 50+ years Karen; his sons Rory and Mason (Farrah); grandkids Avery, Cooper, and Dashell; and brothers Bernie (Maureen) and George (Gail). He was predeceased by his parents Irma and Ziggy; brother Wilf; niece Jill; and step-dad Larry.
A wake will be held in the sunny months, Werner’s favourite time of year (date to follow in new year). Daisy Dukes welcome. BYOB. Just like he would want it.
