When Allan Rae Read was born on Aug. 7, 1961 in Chililabombwe, Zambia (formerly Bancroft, Northern Rhodesia), the people declared his father to finally be a man.
This declaration was in spite of the fact that Eric and Margaret Read already had three daughters: Jean, Jane and Sheila. The Reads were missionaries in Zambia until November, 1965, when Zambia independence came into effect, with increased instability and danger. The family sailed home on the Queen Mary, visited family in Ontario, then headed to Innisfail, where the kids learned what “cold” meant.
After Innisfail, they ministered in Ontario before returning to Alberta to Nanton in 1976, where the teenaged Allan immediately became involved in minor hockey, working at the gas station, Queen’s Ball, student council and local teen shenanigans.
He worked for Tubiscope and did a brief stint in a diamond mine in Tungsten. Eventually he landed as a welder in W and W, which became Two W Livestock Manufacturing. He married Sheena Fleming in 1992, and the couple had one child, Jacob, who Allan adored more than anything. Allan loved fishing and spent most of his spare time fishing – and playing hockey and listening to rock and roll.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) put an end to most of the physical activities he loved, but he still had family surrounding him as he battled this disease that eventually took his life.
He leaves behind Sheena, Jacob (Nicole), Jean (Doug), Jane (Bill), Sheila (Tom), adored granddaughter Joelle, numerous nieces and nephews, and a growing list of great-nieces and great-nephews. He is predeceased by his parents Eric and Margaret Read, and nephews Gavin and Craig.
In lieu of flowers, donations would be gratefully appreciated to the Canadian Lung Association (lung.ca) or to Ronald McDonald House (rmhcalberta.org).
A celebration of life for Allan will be held Jan. 5, 2024, at 2 pm in the lower Nanton Community Memorial Centre 2204 18 St, Nanton.
Caring for the family is Lyle Reeves Funerals of High River (Craig Snodgrass) 403.652.4242.
