Obituary For Vivian Gail Prette
May 22, 1940 – November 13, 2024
With hearts full of treasured memories, the family of Gail Prette from Grande Prairie, Alberta announces the peaceful passing of our beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, after a brief battle with cancer at the age of 84 years.
She is survived by her son Richard (Darlene) Dahl, his son Daniel (Nancy) Dahl and their children Braydan, Max, Mya and Robert; her daughter Darlene Marie Dahl and her son Seth Mitchell Chorzempa and his son Wyatt; her daughter Rai (Randy) Smith and their children Elaine Dahl and her daughters Talia and Autumn, Tyler Dahl, and Faline (Nathaniel) Gosset and their daughter Marley, her half-sister Kimberley Klassen and her children, her nieces and nephews and their families, as well as many individuals who came into her life as extended family members and are too numerous to name individually.
She was predeceased by her mother Florence Toews, her father and second mom Leonard and Ida Prette, her siblings Richard Prette, Jeanne Reckseidler, Herb Prette and Clinton Prette, her grandson Brian Chorzempa, her niece Dawn Prette and her grand nephew Kyle Reckseidler.
Gail was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the youngest in a family of 5 children. Her childhood was spent on a farm in Hillside, Manitoba and then in Victoria, British Columbia where she attended high school while working part-time at the Haultain Fish and Chip Shop.
After graduating, she secured work as a legal secretary. In 1958, she moved to Calgary where she began a life that involved an array of office jobs alternating with ranch or cooking jobs; frequent moves across British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba; two children born in the same year with a third child arriving five years later as she followed her heart from 1959 through 1970 all in an effort to make a home.
Subsequent relationships, jobs and moves had her relocating to Grande Prairie in 1987. In the years that followed, she managed to create a stable home base with home ownership. She socialized at dances through the Triple O’s Singles Club and the Legion; managed her mental health care with Emotions Anonymous stress management courses, and being part of a group of ladies called the HaHa Sisterhood.
She joined the Grande Prairie and District Branch of the Alberta Genealogy Society in 2005, becoming Treasurer 2007-2011; volunteered in the Seniors Wellness Clinics at the Golden Age Centre beginning 2008; volunteered at the South Peace Regional Archives from 2009, ultimately creating a database project, becoming Treasurer in 2011; was a part of the Highland Park Neighbourhood Association from 2013. Gail also became known by the staff and students of Parkside Montessori as the “lady in the window” because she faithfully waved ‘Good Morning’ to her family and anyone else who waved back at her.
Along the way, she made many deep friendships with her sense of humour, warm smile, kind nature and willingness to share her knowledge and abilities with others.
The family would like to thank the staff of the Prairie Lake Hospice for their compassionate support.
There will be a viewing from 7:00pm-8:00pm on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at Bear Creek Funeral Home (11802 99 Avenue in Grande Prairie, Alberta).
