Obituary For Oscar Viker
1939-2024
Oscar was born in a log cabin on February 5,1939 in Valleyview, AB. This is where he spent his early childhood years with a lot of that time spent on his Grandma and Grandpa Halverson’s farm, hanging out with his cousin Allan. At the age of eight he moved with his family to High Prairie where he attended school until grade ten.
When Oscar was eighteen his dad died and he left home to look for work, traveling throughout B.C. and Alberta taking on various jobs. These included working in a dairy, making butter and delivering milk with a horse and wagon, as well as construction work and other odd jobs. In 1960 Oscar headed east where he spent the next 5 to 6 years.
Some of his most memorable times were those working in the tobacco fields in Southern Ontario. It was here that he met and married his wife, Evelyn Barnhardt. In 1965 he moved back to High Prairie where his daughter Katreena was born. This was followed by a move to Ft. St. John B.C. and the births of three more children, Nelson. Tracy (Neil) and Kelly.
Oscar was not one to be tied down for long. Over the next 25 to 30 years, he lived in numerous locations and most often with his partner, Marg Lacey. During this time period he held various jobs including working in the oilfield, on ranches and in construction. He moved to his sister Linda’s acreage near Grande Prairie in 2000 where he spent the next twenty years. In late 2019 he moved, for the last time, to the long-term care home in Hythe Ab, where he was well cared for until his passing.
If you knew Oscar, you may remember him for the twinkle in his eye, a roll your own cigarette in between his fingers, a beer in his hand and his guitar nearby. He was always ready to belt out a song, make a smart-ass remark or pull a prank to keep you on your toes. That’s what made him so likable, that’s what made him Oscar.
