Obituary For Mary “Mitzie” Quapp
Mary “Mitzie” Quapp passed away and went home to be with her Lord and Saviour on May 24, 2024. She was 89 years old.
Mitzie was born on July 9, 1934 in Brandon, Manitoba. She grew up on a farm near Newton and attended Wingham school. From there she moved to Winnipeg and obtained her nursing degree at the Grace Hospital School of Nursing.
It was at her older sister Rita’s wedding where Mitzie met her future husband, Ernest Quapp. This was the start of a long-distance relationship that involved numerous road trips for Ernest, from Coaldale all the way to Winnipeg, where Mitzie was studying. After several years, Ernest and Mitzie were married on July 11, 1959. They initially lived in Lethbridge Alberta where they welcomed their two boys. The lure of farming took them to northern Alberta and they ended up starting a farm equipment business in Grande Prairie. Mitzie worked at the local hospital for a period of time but after the family was involved in a serious car accident, she chose to stay home and use her nursing skills to look after their injured son. This along with the arrival of Val, their third child, and the demands of the family business kept her very busy.
Mitzie was known for her love for people, her generosity to those in need and her kindness to everyone she met. Family and friends were important to her. She prayed for them faithfully and kept in contact with regular phone calls, cards and letters. Her interests included journaling, gardening and reading. She really enjoyed leading Kay Arthur Bible studies in her home. Most of all she loved being a mom, grandma and great-grandma, and always welcomed her kids and their families with open arms when they came to visit.
In February 2017, Mitzie suffered a stroke and was moved from their home to a care facility. Ernest stayed in their house but visited Mitzie daily. After living apart for many years, he was finally able to join her at the same facility where they could spend time together until her passing.
Left to cherish her memory are her 3 children, Michael (Doreen), Greg (Susan) and Val, 9 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, along with 2 siblings, Helen and Abe as well as other extended family.
Mitzie was predeceased by her parents Henry and Helen Epp, sisters Anne and Rita, and brother Henry.
A small private family internment service will be held for Mitzie at the gravesite.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful nursing staff at Prairie Lake for their excellent care for Mitzie. It was clear that they loved her dearly, and enjoyed being with her.
