Obituary For Linda Smith Dunbar
July 24, 1947 – June 12, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Linda Smith Dunbar. Linda passed away at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital on June 12th, 2024, where she had succumbed to a recent illness.
Linda was the oldest child of Florence Testawich and was born in McLennan, Alberta, in July 1947. Raised by her maternal grandmother, Louise, Linda grew up in the Peace River area.
In 1975, Linda, her first husband Edwin Smith, and their children moved to Grimshaw where they established a life. She worked at various jobs but the ones she loved the most were at Dee N Gee Foods and Tags Convenience. At these places she met some of her best friends who supported her throughout her life. It is also where she became everyone’s friend. I’m sure that many people in Grimshaw have a story about Linda’s endearing humor and sarcastic wit! There wasn’t a weekday lunch hour where you couldn’t find Linda, Kathryn, and Joan spending time together. Their friend Floyd Stromsted used to call them “The View” and none of them listened to each other while they all talked!!
Linda loved her sports. She said if there was an Olympic event for watching sports, she would win gold every time! Whether it was hockey, the Montreal Canadiens (of course), figure skating, tennis, or golf, you could always find Linda enjoying any game.
Linda was also a naturally talented singer. She would delight the Roaring 20’s lounge with her beautiful rendition of Patsy Cline’s song, “Crazy”. She became a self-taught guitar player after she was gifted a guitar by her husband Edwin. Country music was her favorite. She would listen to “Willy’s Roadhouse” for hours and requested that station every time she got into a vehicle with satellite radio!
Linda was a strong, capable woman. She lost her first husband Edwin in 1985 and raised three teenagers as a single parent. She did have support through the community of Grimshaw and her close friends.
In 1990, Linda married Warren Dunbar from Grande Prairie. Warren introduced Linda to golf and they spent many summers at the Mighty Peace Golf Club with their friends. As every golfer dreams, Linda had the high honour of getting a hole-in-one!
Linda is survived by her husband Warren Dunbar, and leaves to mourn her four children, Chris Chierchio and his wife Nair, Kelly Smith and her partner Scott, Karen Giesbrecht and her husband Ken, and Edwin Smith and his partner Becca, as well as her grandchildren Kenny, Kiersten, and Cristiano.
Linda is predeceased by her first husband Edwin Smith and numerous relatives.
Linda requested no funeral or memorial and has chosen to be cremated. We invite family and friends to join us in honoring her one-of-a kind spirit with a donation to your local SPCA.
The family would also like to thank the ICU unit and Surgical Unit 21 at the Grande Prairie Regional Hospital for their amazing care of Linda.
