Obituary for
Timothy Edward “Timmy” Lent
“Life and love go on, let the music play.” -Johnny Cash
The Lent family is devastated to announce that our youngest brother, Timothy Edward Lent, passed away on October 31st, 2024, at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Timmy died suddenly after a short but complicated cancer at the young age of 63, but peacefully, surrounded by his children, sister Mary Lou Lee, and brothers Harry and Michael. He died just two months after the passing of his eldest sibling, Susan Jane Lent, who was one of his closest friends.
Timmy Lent was born on November 21, 1960, in Edmonton, the youngest of seven children born to Harry Lent and Adrienne Lent (Brown). He attended St. Agnes Elementary and Louis St. Laurent Junior/Senior High School where, he excelled as a multi-talented student who could either chart Tom Scott jazz tunes for an orchestra of twenty-seven musicians, or take on the lead role in the musical “Masquerade In Vienna” (Die Fledermaus) and knock everyone out with his unique singing talents. One of Tim’s early mentors was teacher Frank Dunnigan who developed the All City Band program for the Catholic school district and inspired Tim in his pursuit of music.
Being the youngest child in a big family of singers and musicians, Timmy eventually became one of the best performing and studio drummers in Western Canada, especially for rhythm and blues and country bands, while also being acclaimed as one of the best vocalists, especially for studio work and difficult harmonies. He began playing for singers like Laura Vinson, Larry Gustafson, Gary Fjellgaard, Gary Kolliger and eventually, as the lead vocalist for The Lent Brothers Band with his brothers Harry, Frank and Michael through the ‘80s and ‘90s. That band released an album in 1991 called THICKER THAN WATER and played heavily in Western Canada but especially in Edmonton at Andantes, The Yardbird Suite, and lengthy stints at The Commercial Hotel’s Blues bar on Whyte. In the course of his long and successful career in music, Timmy played with and collaborated with many musicians including Mark Koenig, Gil Penner, Wanda Feland, Andrew Glover, Kent Sangster, Bob Tildesley, R. Harlan Smith, Dick Damron, Joe Kozack, Jeff Bradshaw, Dave Babcock, Joyce Smith and many others. Timmy had an infectious and contagious sense of humor that became legendary, and he also had, as part of that, a wondrous gift for mimicry. He could imitate anyone. Wherever Timmy was playing, the people he was working with would be in stitches because Timmy was so funny and knew how to let that humour become almost desperately surreal. He was truly loved by a huge community of musical performers in Western Canada. He was a sweet and generous guy aside from all his obvious talents as a musician and vocalist.
Timmy is survived by his children, Christopher Lent, Pamela Lent, Taylor Mowbray-Lent and Hannah Mowbray-Lent; grandchildren, Spencer, Olivia and Elijah; former partners, Cathy Buckner and Merry LeBlanc; sister, Mary-Lou Lee (Scott); brothers, John (Jude), Harry (Terry), Frank (Debbie) and Michael (Bev); thirteen nieces and nephews; and many incredible first cousins, but especially two first cousins who lived out West: Jane Campbell and Kathleen Lindsay.
The Lent family extends their heartfelt thanks to all the doctors and nurses at the University of Alberta Hospital, as well as critical care ICU physician Dr. Paton-Gay at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. Many thanks as well to Jellinek House and the Salvation Army’s Grace Village, where Tim most recently resided. The caring staff and residents were very dear to Timmy. We also want to thank Richard Letendre for being such a benign friend and also, Timmy’s close friends Sheri and Ryan.
Timmy Lent had a rich, wonderful life, but also experienced some tough challenges as well. Instinctively, he was an optimistic person who loved his children unconditionally and wanted nothing but the best for each of them. He loved his family, too, his parents and his brothers and sisters, and was always big-hearted and generous in that love. His children and his brothers and sister will miss him terribly.
There will be a Celebration of Timmy’s Life Thursday, November 28, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Park Memorial Chapel, 9709 – 111 Avenue NW, Edmonton. Everyone who knew Timmy is invited to attend so we can all celebrate his life together. Timmy would have loved that.
