It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Teresa Tavano on March 7, 2024 at the age of 89.
Teresa leaves behind her three daughters: MaryJo (Tom), Ninetta, and Giovanna (Mark); eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren, who were a source of much joy.
Teresa was the youngest daughter of eight and is survived by two sisters-in-law and numerous nieces and nephews, both in Canada and Italy.
She was predeceased by her beloved daughter, Lucia; her husband, Raffaele; and all of her siblings.
Teresa and Raffaele arrived in Halifax on April 2, 1955, on the ship Vulcania, settling in Edmonton shortly after. She always regretted not being able to achieve higher education and encouraged her children to do so. In Edmonton, she worked at the GWG factory, and at the Royal Alexandra and Charles Camsell Hospitals.
She was an avid, skilled gardener her entire life, beginning as a child on her family’s farm in Italy and continued to garden until she was 87 years old.
Teresa was entirely dedicated to her family, putting their needs first, caring for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren with unconditional love. Teresa told us many stories in her last days, particularly about growing up in Southern Italy – the beauty, hardships, and community illuminating her strength and grace that we were blessed to have in our lives.
Our hearts are broken and we grieve as we try to live in a world without this beautiful, clever, and funny soul. We are so thankful to have had her as our mom, nonna, and big nonna for all the years we did.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, at St. Andrew Catholic Church (12810 111 Ave NW, Edmonton, Alberta), with an Entombment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery (14611 Mark Messier Trail, Edmonton, Alberta).
Donations in memory of Teresa may be made to Cystic Fibrosis Canada (1305-20 Eglinton Avenue West, Toronto, Ontario).
