Laura Elizabeth Lawson, a beacon of light and laughter, left this world on May 31, 2024, but not without leaving an indelible mark of love and joy on everyone she met. Born on October 20, 1988, in St. Albert, Alberta, Laura was the kind of person who could find humor in the little things and spread smiles as effortlessly as the sun spreads warmth.
Laura’s battle with cancer was fought with the same courage and humor she brought to every other aspect of her life. She was a two time kidney recipient and was grateful to her sister, Chris, and Uncle Jan for every extra minute of life they gave her. She passed away in Edmonton, Alberta, surrounded by the love of her family, which includes her adoring parents, Robert and Johanna Lawson; her sisters, Chris (Lorne) Lawson, Angela (Nathan) Terry, and Lisa (Ian) Huskins; and her two best friends. She was fortunate enough to have time to say her goodbyes to the apple of her eye, her son, Sawyer Sanford.
Professionally, Laura trained to be an Emergency Communications Specialist, a role that allowed her to serve her community with passion and dedication. She climbed the ranks to become a Technical Support Captain at Edmonton Fire Rescue Services by 2021. Laura was the kind of co-worker who not only had your back during emergencies but also had a knack for defusing tension with her quick wit and infectious laugh.
Laura’s love for animals was only matched by her love for the great outdoors and time she got to spend with Sawyer. She could reel in a fish with the same finesse she used to stitch together a new outfit or craft a handmade gift. Her shopping trips were less about the purchases and more about the hilarious stories she would come back with. But it was with her son, Sawyer, that Laura truly shined the brightest. Every moment with him was an adventure, filled with laughter and the kind of memories that turn into family legends.
Describing Laura as courageous, funny, and friendly only scratches the surface of who she was. She was well known by many and always had a recommendation if someone needed it. One of her favourite quotes was, “If you can be something, be kind” and she certainly lived that. In her essence, Laura was a comedian at heart and she would have wanted us to leave her farewell with a chuckle rather than a tear.
Laura’s legacy is not just in the lives she touched with her humor and kindness, but also in the example she set on how to face adversity with a smile and persistent strength. She taught us all that no matter what life throws at you, you can take it on with a good joke and a big heart.
So, as we say goodbye to Laura, let’s not dwell on the sadness of her passing but celebrate the joy she brought into our lives. Let us remember her for the laughter, the adventures, and the countless funny stories that will continue to bring smiles to our faces for years to come. Laura, you may have signed off from this world, but your punchlines will echo in our hearts forever.
