June Thamer Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of June Thamer on March 9, 2024, at the age of 82, in Edmonton, Alberta.
June is survived by Glenn, her husband of over 60 years, daughter Terri (Ron) Hamm, daughter Cindy (Doug) Smith, eight Grandchildren, 5 Great Grandchildren, her sisters Lorraine Peter, Harriett Lietz, Millie (Lawrence) Schultz, Connie (Fred) Koop and Judy (Henry) Chutskoff.
June was predeceased by her daughter Brenda Gaida, son-in-law Brian Gaida, Her parents Mary and Gunnar Runnblom, sister Carol Fluckiger, sister Alice Olson and sister Louise Bilsky.
June was born in Wadena, Saskatchewan, grew up on a farm near Kuroki, went to school at Bear Lake School, then Kuroki, then Wadena and graduated from Caronport High School. She trained as an RN at Regina General, class of 1962, and took her first Nursing position at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.
In Saskatoon she reacquainted with Glenn whom she had met in High School, they fell in love and were married on December 21, 1963. In April of 1964, the Engineering student society at U of S granted her their PHT degree for putting hubby through when Glenn graduated from Engineering. In August 1965 they moved to Edmonton.
June was a gifted Soprano, during her years in Regina, she was in a ladies trio with Inez Larson and Eunice Erickson which sang at many churches in the Regina area. She was in church choirs in Edmonton for over 30 years. At Lansdown Baptist, she organized, trained and conducted a children’s choir in the musical The Music Machine, teaching about the 9 fruits of the Spirit.
June raised 3 beautiful girls and made time to sew most of their dresses, many of her own clothes and a suit for Glenn. She was a gifted seamstress. She found time to do some oil painting, never told anyone about this but several pieces in her home tell the story.
June fostered a boy for a year and then served as an emergency foster home for several years. When a crisis happened, they would show up in the middle of the night with one or two children, often needing a meal, a bath and a warm bed for a few days. She poured her love into these scared children without reservation.
June was active in the Christian Women’s Club of west Edmonton, serving on the organizing committee for monthly luncheons and hosting a Bible Study for women for a number of years. Later on, she worked in the Nursery at Ellerslie Road Baptist and visited all the new mothers to encourage them, and coach as needed. She enjoyed cuddling these little people and welcomed them into our church fellowship. Approaching retirement for Glenn, it was June who suggested we get involved with the orphanage in Haiti where she volunteered 6 different times, a couple of months at a time.
At the age of 30, her health started to fail. She was tired all the time and her body started to hurt, eventually being diagnosed with Chronic Fatigue and with Fibromyalgia. She did not enjoy good health for all these years, her friends know the struggles she went through. We are grateful she has gone to her eternal Rest in Jesus, no more broken bones, no more pain, we believe she will be dancing with Jesus forever.
