Helen Jean Murphy (nee Hudson), affectionately known as Jean to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2024, in Edmonton, Alberta. Born on November 26, 1927, in Cascumpec, Prince Edward Island, Jean’s life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and spirited joy that touched all who knew her.
Jean’s early years in Cascumpec laid the foundation for a life characterized by kindness and a nurturing spirit. She carried these qualities with her as she journeyed from the gentle island of her birth to the bustling energy of Alberta, where she would eventually settle and build her legacy.
Jean’s professional life was marked by her many years of dedicated service as a Clerk for Woodwards, where she was known for her warm smile and helpful nature. Her work ethic and commitment to her role were evident to all who worked alongside her.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Jean’s heart was always with her family. She was a loving mother to her children, Stephen Murphy (Coral), Doug Murphy (Betty-Ann), Laurie Murphy, and Trish Heard (Steve); her ten grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren brought her immeasurable joy. She cherished every moment spent with them. Jean’s love extended to her sister, Leta Leard (late Gordon); and numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
Jean was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Patrick Murphy; her parents, Brenton and Helen (nee MacLellan) Hudson; and her siblings, James, Velma, Vernon, Arthur, Ernest, Everett, and Sue; as well as her sisters-in-law, Marg, Fran, and Mary; and brothers-in-law, Joe and Terry. Her family takes comfort in knowing that she is reunited with her loved ones who passed before her.
A woman of many talents, Jean was an active member of the Roslyn Senior’s Band while living at the Roslyn Apartments, sharing her love of music and entertainment with many. She discovered a talent for painting and to this day her artwork graces the walls of many family members. Her passion for writing led her to author three autobiographical books, capturing the stories of her life’s journey and the cherished memories from PEI to Alberta.
Jean’s legacy is one of love, kindness, and a spirited zest for life. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her, and her stories will continue to inspire future generations. Jean’s life was a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived and the enduring power of family and friendship.
In keeping with Jean’s wishes, cremation has taken place and her Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 4th, 2024 at 2:00 pm in St. Albert Funeral Home, 9 Muir Dr., St. Albert.
