It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our dearest mother, EMERENCIANA (Emmy, Ena, Myrna) ONG HERVAS.
She passed away on Sept 12, 2024, Feast of the Most Holy Name of Mary, in Edmonton at the age of 88. She now joins our father, Rafael, (2010), her parents Lucio (1982) and Josefa (2012), and her brothers Agustin (2020) and Roman (2023).
Emmy’s legacy lives on with her four loving daughters; Marie Clarisa (Martin) Arandia, Joycelyn (Patrick) Campbell, Marilou (Shaun) Malo, and Sharon Hervas.
Her spirit will continue to illuminate the paths of her awesome grandkids; Martee (Raquel), Denise, Kyle, and JR Arandia; Francis (Karina) and James Perlas, Alexander, Jazzmine, Cierra, Xavier, Talon, Lucas and Ignatius Campbell; Joseph and Faustina Malo; including the arrival of her first great-granddaughter, Reese Arandia.
Cherishing her memory are her dear siblings; Luis (Mely) Ong, Evelina (Mark) Paveglio, Dr. Edgardo (Aquilina) Ong; and sister-in-law, Auring Ong.
Emerenciana was born in Sampaloc Manila, Philippines in 1936. An elementary school teacher/librarian by profession, she was adored by all her students. She immigrated to Canada in 1999 with her husband, Rafael. Settling in Edmonton with her two youngest daughters, she dedicated much of her years in Canada as a selfless caregiver for her husband and mother. Her self-sacrifice set a true example of Christian charity.
She was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2012. She underwent chemotherapy and was labeled a ‘medical miracle’ by her doctor, outliving all medical expectations. During the pandemic our family initiated an online prayer group to recite the Chaplet of Divine mercy daily at 3:00 p.m. Despite her health struggles Emmy actively participated in the meetings and continued doing so for the past 4 years.
Her peaceful death moved the heart of her physician who noted a life-long lesson on the limitations of medical science and the truth of spiritual reality that compassion is needed for each soul in their spiritual journey.
Our family wishes to express gratitude to the homecare nurses and her astute family doctor along with all her home caregivers, especially Rogielyn, who provided her with great care and comfort in her final years at home. Her parish community of St. Agnes and St. Anthony was also instrumental in providing her spiritual care with frequent reception of the sacraments of the Eucharist and Anointing of the Sick.
Emmy’s life was a testament to the beauty of selflessness and the enduring power of love. She lived by the words of Mother Teresa, “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love”. She touched the lives of many with her small acts of great love.
From Sept 16-20, 2024 there will be a daily Visitation held at 3:00 p.m. at Connelly McKinley with the prayers of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and novena prayers for the faithful departed. Furthermore, on Friday, Sept 20, 2024, a Prayer Service will be held at the same venue at 7:00 p.m.
The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church (10661 82 Ave NW, Edmonton, AB) on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at 12:00 noon, with Interment to follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, 14611 Mark Messier Trail NW, Edmonton.
As we bid farewell to Emmy, we do so with hearts full of gratitude for the time we shared with her. In every blooming flower, in every lesson learned, and in every act of kindness especially to the poor and the sick, her spirit lives on. Her love will forever be the light guiding our way.
MAMA, I love you!
Arrangements entrusted to Connelly-McKinley Downtown Chapel.
