Richard Ernest Sargent
September 30, 1934 – September 28, 2023
With heavy hearts, the family of Richard (Dick, Dicker) Ernest Sargent announces the passing of Dick on September 28, 2023, at the Drayton Valley Hospital and Care Center.
Dick was born September 30, 1934, in a little house in Alix to Albert and Louise by a midwife. He was the oldest of six children and was raised on a farm just outside of Alix. Dick met his bride, Carol, in 1957 where Carol was working in her mother’s café in Alix. They were married in 1957 and lived on a farm outside Alix to start and raise their family, Colleen and Wayne.
In 1978 a decision was made to move to Lodgepole as the creamery where Dick worked burnt down and he was not willing to commute to Red Deer to work. This area is where Dick and Carol visited over the years from the 1960’s and was an area they fell in love with, as it was prime hunting and fishing, which Dick was proficient and passionate about. On the move to Lodgepole, Dick and Carol bought and ran Sargent’s General Store. In 1979, Dick went to work in the oilfield as a tank truck driver and then went to work at Western Decalta at one of the battery sites, 11-26. The company, at the time, provided housing on site for the families. As battery site housing was being phased out, Dick and Carol purchased a little blue house in Lodgepole in 1989. Dick took pride in having the acreage looking like a park, and Carol had put her green thumb to work having two gardens. Dick retired in 1999, and as Dick’s health started to fail, a decision to move into Drayton Valley was made in 2007, until his passing.
Dick loved being around or go camping with family and friends. He always had a smile on his face, a joke or story to share. He would greet you with “Boo” and send you off with “Toodeloo”. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 66 years, Carol; daughter, Colleen (Don) Harrison; son, Wayne (Eileen) Sargent; grandchildren, Richard (Cheri) Watchel, Laurel (Curtis) Still, Brenda (Chris) Pritchard, Andrea Sargent, and John Sargent; great-grandchildren, Paiden, Jordan, Ethan, Emily, Leigha, Hannah, and Freyja; sisters, Ruby (Mike) and Marlene (John), as well as many extended family and wonderful friends.
Dick’s family would like to thank Dr. White and the nurses for their kind care and attention in looking after Dick while he was in hospital.
In celebration of Dick’s life, a Come and Go Tea will be held at the 55+ Senior Citizen Centre, 5138-52 Avenue, Drayton Valley, on Friday, October 6, 2023, between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
For those who so desire, memorial donations in honour of Dick may be made directly to Drayton Valley Hospital Foundation’s Palliative Care Suite Campaign or to the charity of one’s choice.
