Linda Britton Obituary
It is with both broken and grateful hearts that we announce the death of our dear and so loved Mom, “Nanny”, sister and friend, Linda Britton. She died at home with family gathered round in the early hours of All Saints Day and First Friday, November 1, 2024. Linda lived her life trusting Jesus Christ as her Lord and Saviour. All who knew her well have great confidence of her ultimate destination. “Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, come with me. See! The winter is past; the rains are over and gone. Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come…Arise, come, my darling; my beautiful one, come with me.” (Song of Songs 2:10-13 NRSVCE) “Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. They are new every morning; Great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “Therefore I hope in Him!” (Lamentations, 3:22-23 NKJV)
Linda Susan was born a Menzies in Calgary July 16, 1941. She and her dear sisters Sheila (Holzer) and Anne (Ross) enjoyed very happy childhoods in Calgary, Turner Valley and Edmonton with parents Don and Virginia. Linda’s adult life from 1960 on was filled with adventure and purpose, beginning briefly in Vancouver then in and around Calgary and beyond with her beloved husband Bill until he sadly passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2017. Together they have left an extraordinary legacy of thoroughly loved and well-served children (four) and their spouses, grandchildren (twenty-two) and their spouses, great-grandchildren (sixteen), and numerous spiritual sons and daughters who now endeavour to live according to Linda and Bill’s powerful Catholic witness.
Deeply sorrowing due to Linda’s sooner than hoped for departure from this life are Chris and Libby Britton and family, Angela and Bob Christianson and family, Dan and Jodie Britton and family and Jane and Paul Beauchemin and family. Also, Linda’s large extended family, many friends, spiritual children and spiritual family are pained by her sudden absence from their lives. Her hallmark attitudes of light hearted good humour, real honesty and abundant generosity made the world a healthier, more informed and brighter place.
Every person who spent time with Linda benefitted from her heartfelt offering “let me read you something interesting”. She was broadly read and thus, if it wasn’t the writings of St. Thomas Aquinas or “First Things” magazine, it would be some current event topic she was fully prepared to passionately discuss. Linda was a determined Catholic woman of deep faith and a committed, though informal, academic. She never hesitated to expand her capacities of right reason and understanding and to share these boldly.
Beyond home, family and accompanying Bill in his professional responsibilities, the organizations and people Linda chose to commit time and talent with vibrant energy in and with the Catholic Church, especially through Regnum Christi, including Clear Water Academy school, Arcatheos and Captivenia camps, Birthright and Teen-Aid. To this day, there are very many people connected to these organizations who reap wisdom, inspiration and hope from knowing and interacting with Linda. In turn, she was inspired by and grateful for the people she walked with through life. Of all of Linda’s activities, the thing she was most determined about was praying for her friends, loved ones, those in need and our suffering world.
In Linda’s final weeks at home, the whole family was greatly aided by the excellent help of caregivers from “Focus on Caring”. Also, several wise and good holistic and medical doctors assisted the navigation of Linda’s complicated and aggressive illness. These faithful professionals helped ease the burden and the family is truly grateful.
