Gareth Cuff Obituary
Gareth Robert Cuff, of Airdrie, AB, died suddenly by cardiac arrest on Saturday, March 30, 2024, at age 49. Gareth was born on July 1, 1974, in Southport, UK to William “Bill” Cuff and Jean (Brown) Cuff. Gareth emigrated to Canada with his family in 1978 where he grew up in Calgary, AB.
Gareth’s first school was Rundle Elementary where he formed many of the friendships that would last his lifetime. Many still affectionately claim to be of the original “Run-dle” kids. Gareth attended James Fowler High School, where he was not only known as the original skateboarder but was also known as being friends to any and everyone; things he is still remembered for today.
After finishing James Fowler High School in 1992, he attended Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) and earned his Electrician Journeyman Certification in 2000 followed by his Instrument Technician apprenticeship in 2003. Thereafter, he became a Master Electrician and Safety Codes Officer which took Gareth all over Canada; however, after the birth of his son, he preferred to stay home with his family. Over the course of his career, Gareth progressed from journeyman electrician to Master Electrician, Safety Codes Officer, and eventually becoming Electrical, Instrumentation and Controls Manager with Trialta. During the years spent with Trialta, Gareth realized some of his most profound career successes due to his technical acumen and distinctive skills in client relations.
However successful in his career, Gareth’s greatest pride and accomplishment was the life he built with Shawna and his children, Caden and Arylin. Starting first in Calgary, and then moving to Airdrie, AB, Shawna and Gareth, created a lifetime of memories spanning 34 years together. They met in junior high school and have been together since high school. They were married in 2003 and Gareth would often joke they got married because “I finally knocked her up”. This sense of humour he no doubt passed onto his youngest Arylin, while his drive and strength of character will live on in his first born, Caden. Everything Gareth did was for his family.
Gareth was an exceptional individual, clever, witty, charismatic, and full of life. He had many passions. He loved skateboarding, dirt biking, target shooting, hockey, baseball, music, and even fishing (even if he never managed to catch a fish). For many years, he coached soccer for his son’s team, a role he fulfilled with immense joy alongside his dad. His recent passion was pool. As team captain of the Nice Rack, he led his team to win a trip to Chicago. He had a brilliant mind and excelled at everything he tried. From chess, to playing the guitar and drums, he was characteristically multitalented.
Gareth was larger than life and left a legacy of cherished stories and life lessons. He was authentic and a legend in his own right. He always spoke his mind and meant what he said. While many did not agree with all his opinions, no one can deny he was unafraid of speaking up on what he believed in. However, there was another side to Gareth. His generosity and spirit were parallel to none. His door – his heart – were always open to friends and family. One only need to talk to those whose life he touched, to understand the impact Gareth made. He was genuinely one of a kind.
Gareth is predeceased by his father, William, and his uncle, Robert. He will forever be missed by his wife, Shawna; children Caden Cuff, and Arylin Cuff; mother, Jean Cuff; sister Joanne (John) Vandenberg; brother James (Karen MacNeill) Cuff. There are several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, extended family members, numerous friends, and colleagues that will also miss him deeply.
Funeral Services are being held for Gareth on Friday, April 12, 2024, at Evan J Strong Funeral Home (3625 12 St NE, Calgary, AB) at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at Rocky View Garden of Peace Cemetery. Reception to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you Adopt a Honey Badger through the World Wildlife Foundation in Gareth’s honour. gifts.worldwildlife.org/gift-center/gifts/Species-Adoptions/Honey-badger.aspx.
