Obituary
Barry Alexander Dolan passed away peacefully June 27th, 2023, at the Elrose Health Centre. Dad was born on October 16, 1928, on the farm in the RM of Milden to Alex and Doris Dolan as the 1st of 3 children. He attended a rural school, Glenhurst, just 2 miles from the farm. Dad married Dorothy (nee Weber), the love of his life, on Oct 18, 1950, and they set off on their wonderful 68-year adventure. They spent brief periods in London, Ont. and Saskatoon before permanently setting up home on the family farm near Milden in 1951. On the farm they raised 5 children; first requiring the expansion of the old farm house and then in 1965 building a brand new home. A new house for the two of them was built in Milden in 1980. Dad retired from farming in 1999. During the first 50 years of marriage it was impossible to count the number of square dances and ballroom dances they went to, it was one activity they truly enjoyed as it allowed them connect with old and new friends. In 2014 they took to Condo living in Rosetown. Dorothy and Barry also spent 23 years wintering in Yuma, Arizona. The residents of Westwind RV and Golf Resort in Yuma, Az. became a second family, many which would detour their summer trips to include a visit in Milden. Dorothy passed away in February 2019, with the kids grown, he believed his sole purpose was to care for her in health and sickness and he never did leave her side. Shortly after, Barry moved to Assisted Living in Rosetown and then in 2020, the Elrose Health Centre.
Dad was always available to help out with service clubs and organizations his entire life, whether they involved his children’s activities, the church or for just the overall good for the community. The miles Mom and Dad put on driving 5 children to events and sports were probably more than he put on farming. Once they commented that they had waived to each other three times that particular day while meeting on the road. Dad was a lifelong member of the Lions Club serving several terms as Director and one as President. Dad was also involved in local politics with the R.M of Milden from 1976 to 2000, as a counselor and the last 9 years as the Reeve.
Dad was Mr. Fix It when he wasn’t being Mr. Build it. He was first known for taking an old truck chassis and drive train to build his own garden tractor with a homemade 4 foot cultivator shovel for doing the large garden and subsequently a homemade pull behind mower. He also built from scratch a Go Cart which entertained the kids, neighbours and kept the in-laws visiting as his nieces and nephews wanted another chance to drive it. Whether he was using his skills as a welder, mechanic, electrician, plumber or mechanic Dad always kept everything running. He always took the time to show the kids how and what he was doing and many of the skills became ingrained in us.
Dad’s work ethic and community responsibility was evident to all. His children and grandchildren all owe a good measure of their successes to his shining example. Barry is survived by: 5 Children: Gary Dolan (Marj), Barb Hess (Vaughan), Doug Dolan, Patti Bobinski, Daryl Dolan (Tina) along with 2 special daughters-in law Penny Aadland and Brenda Langelier – 11 Grandchildren: Geoff Dolan (Amanda), Corey Dolan, Jillian Hess (Jason), Monroe Hess (Erin), Teresa Wasend (Jerret), Wade Dolan, Mitchel Dolan (Caitlyn), Shauna Vandenbroek (Kiefer), Christine Bobinski (Morgan), Marshall Dolan (Courtney), Brenna Dolan (Kyle) – 13 Great Grandchildren: Jan, Reise, Nash, Maks, Cassidy, Payton, Logan, Berkley, Bennett, Anderson, Madeline, Wylder and Beckett, In-laws; Leona, Verna, Gordon and Vi. Barry was predeceased by: his Wife Dorothy, Son- Leslie, Parents – Alex and Doris, Parents-In-law – John and Teresa, Granddaughter – Jennifer, Great Grandson – Henry, Son-in-law – Peter, Sisters -Kay and Peggy.
A Celebration of Barry’s Life will be held at the Rosetown United Church on Monday, July 24, 2023 at 1:30 PM. In lieu of flowers the family asks you consider a donation in his name to Stars Air Ambulance.
