Obituary
It is with great sadness the family of Barbara Lauretta (Langille) Jackson announces her passing, which occurred on Saturday, March 18, 2023, at the Loch Lomond Village. Born in Saint John, NB, on October 13, 1935, she was daughter of the late Warren and Sarah (Tait) Langille and loving wife of the late William H. Jackson.
Barb grew up in St. Martin’s with a close network of relatives and friends who remained in each other lives right up until her passing. She loved spending time with the people in her life and had a deep interest in their activities, achievements, and wellbeing. She also maintained a presence in St. Martin’s as a member of the United and Baptist Churches. One of Barb’s fondest memories was travelling on the Queen Mary and Queen Elizabeth ships with Olga H. to Europe. It was a regular topic of discussion throughout her life and the reason why she encouraged Cynthia and Michael to travel.
After graduating from Teachers’ College, Barb taught for several years at various schools including Alexandra School in the city’s North End before staying home to raise Cynthia and Michael. Once they were off to high school, she worked for many years as a security officer at the Saint John Airport, where she developed a number of close friendships.
In the 1960s, Barb and Bill designed and built their home on Treadwell Lake, which has been a family anchor ever since. Many of Bill and Barb’s great family memories were created there, not only with Cynthia and Michael but with all of the grandsons, as well. The backyard beach was always a popular swimming spot for neighbors and extended family, and Barb was frequently in the water, too. In the winters, Bill always cleared a rink, set up benches and flood lights so everyone could skate. This wonderful home will continue on with the next generation so more family memories can be created on Treadwell Lake.
Barb was a devoted wife and mother, often sacrificing her own wishes and desires for Bill and the kids. She was extremely proud of the accomplishments of Cynthia and Michael and adored both of them. Once her four grandsons arrived, she jumped in to the role of “Grammie” and “Nanny” whole heartedly and regularly planned field trips to various city landmarks, beaches, playgrounds and her favorite location, the Caves at St. Martin’s. She encouraged the boys in all of their structured activities but also fostered a love for creativity and imagination. It was common for Barb and her grandsons to collect rocks, especially heart shaped ones, and then bring them home to paint or to build a rainy day pillow fort in the living room.
Barb was a talented singer, pianist and artist but mainly kept those talents close to her family and friends. She would often sit down at the piano and sing tunes from “The Sound of Music”, “My Fair Lady” and other Broadway classics. She played in a number of churches, sang in choirs, and taught piano lessons to some of the neighbourhood children.
Barbara is survived by her son Michael (Carolyn) Jackson; daughter Cynthia (Kelly) VanBuskirk; grandchildren Cecil (Kaitlin) VanBuskirk, Oliver VanBuskirk, Charlie and Will Jackson as well as several nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents and husband, Barbara is predeceased by her sister Leona Gillcrist; brother-in-law Murray Gillcrist; brother Arthur Langille; sister-in-law Fran Langille and nephew Andrew Langille.
Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John, NB (646-2424) with visitation on Thursday, March 23, 2023, from 4:00 – 8:00 PM. A funeral service will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023 at 4:00 PM in the funeral home chapel. For those who wish, donations in Barbara’s memory may be made to St. Martin’s Baptist Church.
