With great sadness, the family of Mrs. Bernice Mary Heather reports her peaceful passing, at home, on February 13th, 2023, at the age of 95 years old. In the end, her heart likely failed her, but it never failed any of her friends and family.
Bernice was the eighth child of Mary Anne Coffee and Frank W Shaw. She was musical her whole life and played organ in the church from the age of 12 years. She grew up in Vulcan and then moved to Calgary to attend Secretarial College. In October of 1949, her brother Les talked her into attending a Young Peoples club in Calgary and it was there that she met the love of her life Phil Heather.
Their mutual love of music, singing and dancing was a huge part of their lives, and they were married on July 22, 1950. Their lives took them to Calgary, Lethbridge, Edmonton, High Prairie, Victoria and Nanton. They never shied away from challenging work and had many professions to make ends meet including farming, running a motel, owing a convenience store and Bernice worked at ATB until her retirement. They always had a houseful of kids and supported and encouraged them all. She enjoyed playing her organ, card games, gardening, baking, watching curling and of course visiting with her family and friends.
She was proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion and the Catholic Church and put in countless hours volunteering. Nana was always impeccably dressed (usually with a beautiful hat and matching jewelry) and many have seen her throughout the years on her walks around Nanton. Her family has enjoyed hearing the stories of her kindness and impact on many throughout her amazing life.
Bernice was predeceased by her loving husband, Philip Newman Heather, her parents, and her siblings.
Forever missing her are her daughter Laurie Campbell; granddaughter Candace Heather; and son Philip Earl Heather. Nana will also be missed by her great grandchildren Chase (Mariah) Sapergia and Paige Sapergia.
We all had great visits with her in the last few months and she took extraordinary pride and interest in our lives, hobbies, and careers.
Thank you to the staff at Nanton Community Health Centre, Sandstone Pharmacy, and the amazing staff at the Silver Willow Lodge for all of your wisdom and support over the years. We are comforted in the fact that she is no longer feeling unwell and was reunited with her husband in time for Valentine’s day. She will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.
