GURUNG, Dr. Ai Bahadur
December 04, 1961 – Parbat, Nepal
August 26, 2023 – Edmonton, Alberta
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of a true visionary and community
leader, Dr. Ai Bahadur Gurung. Dr. Gurung peacefully left us on August 26, 2023, at the
University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Alberta at 61 years old. His profound impact on the
Nepalese community and beyond will forever be remembered.
Born in the picturesque and mountainous village of Ranpoo, Parbat, Dr. Gurung’s journey
throughout life was one of dedication, growth, and community empowerment. From his humble
beginnings, he rose to become an iconic figure – enriching the lives of countless individuals
through his compassion, wisdom, and tireless efforts.
Dr. Gurung’s story is one of remarkable achievements. His unwavering commitment to
education led him to earn his Bachelors, Masters, and PhD degrees in Civil Engineering,
specializing in hydrology and water resources, from India, Japan, and Hong Kong, respectively.
He withstood the struggles of studying in a foreign country and rather viewed it as an amazing
opportunity to experience different cultures and learn new things. His pursuit of knowledge was
not only a personal endeavor but also a means to uplift his community. He was the first in his
family and village to seek higher education and always encouraged others to do so. He used his
academic accomplishments as a steppingstone to serve as a bridge between cultures and
generations. His leadership was characterized by empathy, humility, and an unwavering
commitment to fostering connections. His impact will be felt across lifetimes.
After immigrating to Canada in 2002 with his wife and children, he worked in various
consultancy offices as a Civil Engineer in different capacities (municipals, projects, and water
resources) and traveled throughout parts of Alberta, British Columbia, and Ontario. In early
2022, he was working as a Senior Water Administration Engineer with the Government of
Alberta’s Environment and Park (AEP) department.
In Edmonton, Dr. Gurung’s leadership was the cornerstone of the Nepalese community.
His efforts led to the development and establishment of many community-based organizations
where cultural heritage was celebrated and newcomers found a welcoming embrace. From
picking up new arrivals from the airport and helping them navigate the city to organizing
numerous cultural and sports events to make foreigners feel at home. His guidance and
mentorship inspired unity, fostering a sense of belonging among fellow Nepalese expatriates.
Through his tireless efforts, he created bridges that connected generations and empowered
individuals to overcome challenges.
Dr. Gurung was truly one of a kind: proud, caring, independent, and loving in his beliefs.
He made friends with everyone. He was a husband, father, uncle, brother, friend, and known as
“Ai Dai – elder brother” to many of the Nepalese diaspora in Alberta and beyond. He enjoyed
taking care of people and participating in sports, poetry, and music which brought joy for him
and others. Dr. Gurung will be dearly missed and forever remembered.
He was predeceased by his father, Jamdar (warrant officer) Jit Bahadur Gurung (former
British India Gurkha Army), his mother, Balsuba Gurung, and his elder brother, Suk Bahadur
Gurung. Dr. Gurung’s legacy is survived by his loving family, including his wife of 33 years,
Mrs. Laxmi Gurung, his daughter, Dr. Angshu Gurung, and his son, Mr. Aagaman Gurung.
Additionally, his three devoted brothers, Chandra Bahadur Gurung, Shanta Bahadur Gurung, and
Ashok Gurung, and three caring sisters, Deuta Kumari Gurung, Chhita Kumari Gurung, and
Santa Kumari Gurung. He was also an uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. His memory will
be forever cherished by his friends, colleagues, and the countless lives he touched through his
leadership and community service.
Dr. Ai Bahadur Gurung’s family would like to thank both the staff and residents at the
University of Alberta Hospital along with the staff and caregivers of Jasper Place Care Centre for
their love and affection during his stay there.
Rest in peace, dear Dr. Ai Bahadur Gurung. Your legacy will forever live on in the hearts
of the Nepalese community and beyond. Through every high and low, your unwavering faith in
the goodness of life is both an inspiration and a guiding light. As we bid you farewell, let us
remember the lessons you bestowed upon us: to cherish every moment, to love without
conditions, and to always find a reason to smile. And as a testament to your deep love for both
family and community, let us reach out and strengthen the ties that bind us.
