Mary Agnes Streeton (nee Kilgour)
1940 – 2023
Agnes Streeton, beloved wife, mother, and sister, is peacefully at rest after passing away on April 3, 2023.
Born to Ken and Mary Kilgour on October 31, 1940, Agnes was often teased as a child about being born a witch so hated everything related to Halloween – except for treats like black licorice! After growing up on a farm by McCloy Creek and completing high school in Meskanaw, she was off to the big city by first going to Teacher’s College in Saskatoon and then on to Winnipeg to start her career in education. Agnes soon realised her heart was in Saskatchewan so in 1965 she returned to the U of S to get her Bachelor of Education and to marry Gilbert Streeton, the love of her life.
All of that “loving” eventually led where loving does and Agnes gave up teaching to relish her role as mother and homemaker while still giving back to the community. Over the years, she donated her time (and knitting) to numerous programs including knitting crafts for sale to support the Canadian Save the Children Fund, helping establish a community kitchen at St. George’s Anglican church, knitting mittens for children at the local community schools and growing and distributing gladiolas to shut-ins with Gilbert and the United Church Women all while still making time to participate in numerous school events with her children. (Did we mention the knitting?)
In 1988, Agnes was diagnosed with an auto-immune form of vasculitis called Granulomatosis with Polyangiitis (formerly Wegener’s disease). After being told she had 5 years to live, this caring, giving woman became a stubborn fighter. Eventually the disease and requisite medications impacted her mobility and memory, but Agnes turned those 5 years into 35 meaningful ones.
Agnes will be deeply missed by her daughter Avaleen (Janine); son Aaron (Sandy); along with her siblings: Eleanor (Peter), Fern (Raymond), and Gloria (Louis); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends, and anyone who had the chance to hear her laugh. She was predeceased by her husband Gilbert, parents Ken and Mary, and her sisters Beryl and baby Leta Darlene.
Agnes would hate it if we made a fuss over her so a family interment of her ashes will take place at a later date. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations may be made to the Vasculitis Foundation of Canada.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Gray’s Funeral Chapel, (306) 922-4729, Paula Hanson, Funeral Director, and Mary MacWilliams.
