Obituary of Adriana Hazelaar
Adriana (Audrey) Hazelaar — died May 21st, 2023 at the age of 91 in Brockville On, Canada.
Audrey will be remembered for her many remarkable qualities: a talented handicrafter that created a lifetime of exquisite artwork; an animal lover (special mention to Fifi the toy poodle); and rearer of exotic birds in expansive aviaries. Audrey was a gardener of magnificent flowers; a sailor and frequent visitor to Grenadier Island on the St. Lawrence River, a collector of fine clocks and delightful knickknacks; an enthusiast of Andre Rieu’s orchestral sounds; a singer of songs, especially among friends on Dutch Day; and an appreciator of rum and cokes, with a side of Fritos.
Audrey was a woman of the world, born and raised in Indonesia, where she eventually met the love of her life, Tammo Hazelaar (predeceased). They moved back to their mother country of the Netherlands before putting down roots in Brockville, Canada in 1955. Audrey and Tammo spent their golden years together in a log cabin surrounded by their gardens and animals near Athens, Ontario.
In the community, Audrey was a volunteer at the YMCA, teaching needlepoint and other crafting skills to young women; a store clerk at Corrie’s Yarn Store, doling out crafting tips, tricks and encouragement; and a member of the Bethel Reformed Church.
She was a beloved matriarch to a family of five children and nine grandchildren, who have had the privilege of her guidance, friendship, humour, and love, for all of their lives. A great woman, who’s loss is felt greatly.
She is survived by Gay Ratcliffe of Wiarton – Ted (Suz), Ana (Shane), Laura (Jeff). Heidi Cornell (Bill) of Brockville – Bob (Rachel). Diana Hazelaar (Ron) of Brockville – Byron (Maddy), Tom. Debbie Hazelaar-Sacrey (Derrick) of Brockville – Christine (Chris), Andrew (Alisa). Rick Hazelaar (Colleen) of Cambridge – Luke. And 9 great grandchildren.
Audrey’s family would like to thank the hardworking staff at St. Lawrence Lodge for their kindness, care and support over the last many years. A private ceremony will occur later this summer.
