Patricia McCammon Obituary
It is with deep sorrow that the family of Pat McCammon announces her passing on Saturday August 17, 2024, at the age of 99.
Pat was born on March 17, 1925, in Smithers, BC. She was the 6th of 8 children to pioneer settlers, Ernest and Addie Hann. Pat loved and called Smithers her home throughout her entire life. She fondly watched this town grow and prosper over many decades, which left her a wealth of stories and history that she eagerly shared and documented.
Life in Smithers was very full for Pat. She often shared stories of a happy childhood filled with lifetime friendships that she made in school, church and in the community. Often Pat and her friends would make their own adventures by playing a variety of games together, homemade sleighs out of apple boxes and skating on the frozen ditches during the 30’s. In her teenage years, Pat and her friends would often hike down to Lake Kathlyn for a swim or attend community dances. Pat started singing in the United Church choir at the age of 12 and never stopped singing after that. Pat’s faith and spirituality was something she held close throughout her years.
During Pat’s late teens, with the onset of the war, regiments of the military and Air Force personnel arrived in Smithers to protect the newly built Airport. One of those handsome officers was Oakley McCammon. The two met at a community dance in 1943. After courting for a year, Pat and Oakley were married on July 31, 1944, and started their family of (Diana) Lynn in 1946 And Sherrill in 1947. They were happily married for 55 Years.
Pat started her working career at the “Watson’s” store on Main Street during her teens. She also worked at Eby’s hardware store, Wall’s Home Furnishing, and Interior Stationary. In the mid 60’s, Pat partnered with Bea Quadrous and opened a retail clothing store called “Tots to Teens”. A few years later, they rebranded the store to ladies wear called “Village Fashions.” In the mid 80’s Pat and Bea sold the store to Marg Buchanan and started their retirement.
Pat belonged to a large variety of community organizations and groups throughout her years. She sang with the United Church choir, the community choir “Pretenders” and the senior’s choir. She was also a director of the Bulkley Valley Foundation, an active member of the United Church, The hospital Auxiliary, BV Museum, Red Hat Society, and BV Seniors. She also participated in the BC senior games for several years. Pat loved and cherished the friendships and connections she made along the way.
Pat will be dearly missed by her sister, Roberta Robinson; her daughter Lynn Van Horn; her grandchildren Lorinda Loset (David), Christy Van Horn-Hall, Lane Tofsrud (Jeannette), Kim Mellory (Dave), and Jason Van Horn. She also leaves behind 6 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren. Several loving nieces and nephews and descendants of the Hann Clan and McCammon family.
Pat was pre-deceased by her parents Ernest and Addie Hann; her loving husband, Oakley McCammon; daughter Sherrill McCammon; grandson Scott Tofsrud; brothers, Bill and Lloyd Hann; sisters, Wana Abel, Winnie Robinson and Pearl Wall; son-in-law, Bill Van Horn and grandson-in-law, Mark Hall.
