Obituary for
Patrick Joseph Kelly O’Connell
On the warm and beautiful spring evening of May 31st, 2024, Patrick Kelly O’Connell passed away peacefully at home with his family by his side. Patrick was born to Canadian parents, Kay and Al O’Connell, in a small mining town in Zambia. As a boy, he attended St George’s College in Zimbabwe, where he developed his love of history and literature, and first realized his incredible way with words. As a young man, Patrick came to Canada. He attended the Haileybury School of Mines, which led to him meeting his wife, Linda. Patrick’s career in explosives engineering took him on many adventures around the world, giving him a wealth of fascinating knowledge and experiences to share with his family and friends.
With Patrick’s indomitable optimism, sense of humour and joie de vivre, he was a pleasure to be around, and even though he had been ill, the last few years were no exception. Even in his final days, his loved ones were smiling through their tears as he continued to entertain them with his novel and endearing humour. Patrick will be dearly missed by his wife, Linda (nee Green), granddaughters Natasha Gaynor and Julia Gaynor, son Sean O’Connell, daughter Shannon O’Connell-Bell, son-in-law Keith Bell, and his loyal bull terrier Fiona.
Patrick loved his family: his late parents Kay and Al, brother Michael O’Connell of South Africa (late Petra), sister Kathleen Douglas of California, mother-in-law Joan Green of Alberta (Henry), late father-in-law Allan Green, brother-in-law Marcus Green of Louisiana (Kathy), late sister-in-law Brenda Graham, sister-in-law Sandra Craig of Alberta (late John), and his nieces and nephews, Brooke Thomson of Illinois (Michael), Kerry Fisher of California (Wayne), Kim Reunert of South Africa (David), Bryan O’Connell of Germany, Charles Douglas of Massachusetts, Connie Craig of Alberta, Kaitlyn Bazzell of Louisiana (Taylor), and Connor Green of Florida, as well as his great nephews and nieces, Duncan, Alistair and Natalie Fisher, Annabelle Reunert, and Claire Bazzell.
Patrick was charismatic, intelligent, creative, and above all, kind. His greatest joy in life was connecting with others, and he leaves a legacy of friendships around this world.
Patrick’s family extend their most heartfelt gratitude to the healthcare professionals, through whose excellent care, encouragement and support, Patrick was able to maintain his best possible quality of life and continue living in the comfort of his own home. The doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, PSWs and paramedics who provided care to Patrick in Timmins, Sudbury and Thessalon are commended for their compassion, resiliency and dedication.
In accordance with Patrick’s wishes, the family will not be holding a funeral service. If you wish to make a donation in Patrick’s memory, please consider the Timmins and District Hospital Foundation.
