Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jack Smith at the age of 96 following a brief illness.
Jack was born in the Glamis District on July 11, 1927, the youngest son of Thomas and Annie (née Wilson) Smith.
Jack began his farming career in 1943 and was proud of the fact that he saw 80 crops harvested.
In 1950, he married Lyn (Evelyn) Ohrt from Gray, SK and upon the marriage, he started the present Smith farm site. First by building a house in 1950 and over the years adding many buildings, trees, flower beds and manicured lawns.
In 1967 for a Centennial Project, Jack installed a swimming pool with the help of friends and neighbors. The pool was an active sight over the summer months, swimming lessons for all the local children and many a pool party.
Jack was active in the Boy Scouts. First as a Cubs Master for nine years, Rover Leader for two years and District Commissioner for three years.
He was a man of deep faith and participated in many church activities.
He was a Shriner, Mason and Eastern Star member. In 1995, Jack had the honor of being the Grand Patron of Eastern Star, an organization he was deeply devoted to.
He took great pride in his children, ever present at their ball games, basketball, hockey or figure skating events, quietly cheering them on. Jack had many interests and hobbies from cake decorating, ceramics and tatting, just to name a few.
For close to 35 years, Jack and Lyn traveled south to their winter home in Phoenix AZ, in the spring heading home to their cabin at Jackfish Lake.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 73 years Lyn, his children Thane Smith of Keremeos, BC, Kent (Colleen) Smith of Glamis, SK (children Michael and Jillisa), Colin (Carolyn) Smith of Red Deer, AB (children Tyson, Curtis and Justyn (Meagan) and Nancy Kowbel of Victoria, BC (child Siren).
Jack was predeceased by his parents and his youngest son Mark, brother Clarence (Delphine), sister Evelyn (Mac) McDonald, brother-in-law Gerald (Dell), brother-in-law Walter (Lois) and sister-in-law Helen (Al) Myers.
A come and go tea will be held at Orange Memories Care Home – 708 6th Street East Rosetown, SK. from 1:30 – 3:30 on Friday September 29, 2023.
