Obituary
Ronald (Ron) Gary Carlson
February 10, 1950 to August 31, 2023
Of Macrorie and Cutbank, SK
Ron/My Dad/Our Dad/Pa/Grampa Ron
Ron passed away peacefully, during harvest doing what he loved. Ron is survived by his loving wife of over 50 years Joan, daughter Leanne (Sheldon) and son Brian (Jacq’y), grandsons Jaxtan, Chase (Kenzie) and Brennan (Tayia) and their children, his great grandson Nolan and great granddaughter Isla. Ron was predeceased by his parents, Arnold and Marie Carlson and Joan’s parents, Kenneth H. and Gwen Lee.
So much can be said about our husband, Dad, Grampa, and Pa, he was a farmer, friend, patient, partner, confidant and a loving family man. He was authentic, what you saw was exactly who he was, always loving and welcoming, funny and kind, quirky and curious, gentle and quiet, engaging and charming, encouraging and supportive, resilient and vulnerable, and a storyteller who loved sharing his life with others, it was our honour and privilege to have him as ours.
Dad was born in Saskatoon to Arnold and Marie on February 10, 1950 in Saskatoon and grew up north of Cutbank at the family farm. He loved growing up on the farm working with his animals and over the years exploring and walking countless miles along the riverbank and through the coulees. He loved to travel with his parents, working with his dad, showing his calves in 4-H and spending time with many friends and countless relatives who would often stop by for visits and holidays.
He had a blast growing up, like the classic fun you hear about kids growing up in the 50’s and 60’s. He grew up in the outdoors, with the freedom to ride bikes all over the countryside and get into mischief, some his parents knew about and lots they didn’t. Years and years of the best adventures with the bestest of friends. We enjoyed the many stories and listening to dad giggle when telling us about the adventures he had with Stewart and Neil as they grew up together and maybe ran a bit wild.
After high school he attended Augustana in Camrose and the University of Calgary before coming home to do what he really loved, farming with his dad. Ron was a farmer in body and soul, it could be so hard but so rewarding and he loved it, the Carlson Broken Wheel Ranch was his passion. He was at peace working on the land and he enjoyed working with his cattle, always making sure they got a little bit of extra chop at Christmas time. He would become so energized in the spring when it was time for him to get back out working in the field and loved nothing more that to watch the crop come in in the fall, farming was in his blood.
Ron and Joan were married for just over 50 years and shared the most wonderful times together and were each others support through some of the most challenging. They started their life together as a young couple full of fun and good times with friends and family, making their first home at the farm with Brian and Leanne then later in Macrorie. Their love for each other was so strong, forever partners and best friends. They found so much happiness together and in watching their little family grow as Brian and Leanne found their partners in life and started their own families.
Ron and Brian spent much of their time together. He was so proud to have Brian with him working at the farm and he loved every second. The countless days and hours they spent together, talking and working, laughing or sitting quietly together as best friends was enough reason to wake up each morning.
Jacq’y and Ron hit it off from the start, he could match her energy, teasing each other back and forth and always ending up grinning and laughing. He saw so much potential in Jacq’y and gave her the encouragement she needed to take the big step to go out on her own with her store and to create something. He was so proud of what she did and admired her determination as she became a successful businesswoman. Jacq’y also impressed him with her fishing ability and he was always amazed at how many she could catch, big and small.
Ron was proud of Brennan and happy to see him graduate from university and start his teaching career. He was excited for Brennan’s passion for travel and was happy to see him experiencing new things. Tayia and Ron were fast friends from the start and he loved to to tease her when he would pop into the store for a coffee. He always had a smile when he came in and would say something that would get a laugh. Ron was so very happy to spend time with Nolan and Isla and got such a kick out of watching them grow and play.
Ron loved talking to Chase and they could always find something to chat about. They both shared a love for the coulees looking for deer sheds, fishing and Ron couldn’t have been happier when he and Chase worked at the farm together, even though he almost squashed Chase one day. He loved watching Chase find his way in the world and was proud that he was so passionate about his career in agriculture and was really good at what he did. He was happy for Chase and Kenzie as they bought their first home together and started a new chapter of their life.
Ron loved every minute he got to spend with Jaxtan, some of his favourite times were with him, talking, working together at the farm, exploring the coulees, planting trees, fishing, playing a bit of shinny here and there, making lefse, going to the symphony and trips to Canmore. He really enjoyed just being around Jaxtan and being able to share as much time with him as he could. It brought him so much happiness and pride to watch him grow into the young man he is and was excited for him to start at the U of S in September.
Leanne and her dad had a special bond and she was a dad’s girl from the moment she was born, whisking her away to take pictures in the hallway with the doctor before Joan even had a chance to hold her. He was always her biggest fan and she was his, hanging onto every word he said. He had the ability to pick her out in a crowd and was always there to come to her rescue when she needed him. They loved spending time together sitting right beside each other talking, and would often end up giggling about some crazy idea that they were sure they could get off the ground, mom rolled her eyes more than once, thinking about what they had come up with. In the last few years they loved to visit over morning coffee planning the next adventure.
Ron loved Sheldon from the start, they were both thinkers who would sit back and observe instead of wanting to be the centre of attention. They shared many interests, like gardening (Sheld planting, Ron eating), vehicles, camping, trips to Canmore, fishing and fried chicken, he very much enjoyed the time they spent together. Ron loved when he went fishing with Sheldon and happily handed over any filleting duties (he would smile and say “Sheld just does such a good job). Ron loved to tease him by coming up with an elaborate plan that always had a big role for Sheldon to play, just to watch and see how he reacted.
Ron was interested in everything, he had many passions over the years including cars, his motorcycle, hunting, trapping, fishing, curling, working with his cattle, loving tasty food, having cookouts with the family, travelling, history, music, photography, checking crops, Sunday drives and he loved coffee row, being part of the Macrorie community and all of his friends there.
Ron always wanted to share what he saw, learned and experienced. This could be driving out to get a closer look at a thunderstorm… but maybe not too close after almost getting struck by lightening while watching from the truck and cattle trailer, waking the family up in the middle of the night to go outside to see the northern lights swirling in the sky, sharing some historical tidbits that he had learned about, something he had seen on tv and even just what happened to him in a regular day. He could make anything interesting. He really just wanted to enjoy the simple pleasures, live a good life, have fun and enjoy as much of it as he could.
Ron showed his family how to act when facing adversity. He worked through a multitude of health challenges over the years but he always had empathy and concern for others, he never gave up, complained or became bitter as he showed us his unwavering strength and perseverance time and time and time again.
Thank-you Dad for all the joy, love, laughter and fun you gave us, we know how hard you tried to stay but know that you were ready for some peace and some much-earned rest, your work for the day is finally done. Love you for all time.
Ron’s family would like to share our love and appreciation for all the countless doctors, nurses and all staff who supported him through the last 18 years at the Outlook Hospital, St Paul’s Hospital, the Royal University Hospital and the Cameo Community Renal Centre. We would like to give special thanks to Dr. O Moodley, Dr. H. Mynhardt, Dr. J. Klassen and Dr. J. Barton, Dr. R. Stryker, Dr. D. Tai, Dr. S. Lok and Dr. E Penz. Through your care and attention you made it possible for us to share his life for this long and we are forever grateful.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a charitable donation to the Cameco Community Renal Centre or the Outlook and District Hospital.
