Yandt Thelma 2022

Yandt, Thelma
Thelma Yandt (nee Hutton)
1940 – 2022
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Thelma Yandt on November 15th in her 83rd year after a brief illness.
Much loved wife of Murray Yandt and mother to Christina (Ralph) Ackerman and David (Deborah) Yandt.
She loved to spoil her eight grandchildren: Sydney, Hannah, Jake and Sam Ackerman and
Samantha, Cameron, Meghan and Trevor Yandt.
Thelma is predeceased by her parents, Hilda and John Hutton, as well as her sister Barbara Bockus
and brother James Robert (Susan) Hutton. She is survived by her brother Earl Hutton (Barbara) and sister Phyllis (Peter) Farandatos.
Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec and raised in Lasalle and Verdun, she worked for Bell Canada in the records department.
In 1962, she met Murray on a double blind date on a beach in Plattsburg, NY – although she was not his date!
Murray also worked for Bell Canada. They connected again through phone calls and a few months later,
Thelma hopped a train to Belleville to see Murray a second time. In a twist of fate, they toured the County,
which would eventually become their lifelong home.
No sooner had they started talking about the possibility of getting married when Thelma was transferred to
Newfoundland with Bell. On her second trip back to Montreal, Murray decided not to take any chances,
selling his scuba diving gear to buy her anengagement ring before she headed back.
Married in Montreal in 1964, they honeymooned in New York state before settling in Wellington.
Wellington was a bit of a change for a girl who had grown up in the bustling cities of Quebec, with garbage pickup by a
team of horses and hay wagon. They lived on Main Street across from Artillery Park for 5 years before moving to Belleville.
Thelma left Bell when they welcomed Christina, followed by David a few years later.
Transfers with Bell took them to Bancroft before they moved back to the County in 1975. Thelma returned to Bell to help out for a few months in 1976 and instead ended up retiring from there in 1992, just in time to welcome her first grandchild. She threw her heart into helping out with her grandchildren, stepping in time and time again to babysit at a moment’s notice or driving them to work.
Thelma and Murray spent their retirement travelling throughout North America with their fifth wheel trailer.
As members of the Travelling Supremes, they made great friends and spent many months in Louisiana, helping friends
to clean up and rebuild after Hurricane Katrina. Thelma’s loss will be dearly felt by their travelling friends.
She loved line dancing and camping with friends at the Hideaway Campground.
A private family service will be held at Ainsworth’s Funeral Home in Wellington.
Extended family and friends are invited to remember Thelma and celebrate her great laugh
on Saturday, November 26th at Christina and Ralph’s house, beginning at 5:00 pm.
A buffet dinner will be served, so come hungry.
