William Peter Booper Fogarty 2022

It is with profound sadness that we regret to announce the sudden passing of our dear husband, father, brother, uncle, and papa, Bill “Bopper” Fogarty on Tuesday, October 4th, 2022.
Born in the City Hospital on January 18th, 1952, he was the son of the late William Peter and Helen (MacDonald) Fogarty.
Bill grew up on Matilda St. in Whitney Pier with his six brothers and sisters, where he considered himself his mother’s favourite.
He graduated from Sydney Academy after which, he attended St. Mary’s University and went on to work for the recreation department of CBRM. Bill met the love of his life, Marjorie (nee Gouthro), from Glace Bay, and a few years later they were married in 1976. Marj and Bill were inseparable and the absolute best of friends.
Bill was a true gentleman and treated Marj like a Queen. They enjoyed so many memories of travelling, family gatherings, and light-hearted fun that will never be forgotten. There wasn’t a day that went by that they didn’t share a laugh (often at Marj’s expense). Maybe someday we will find his book of Marjisms.
Bill, being the avid learner he was, took an electrical course at Eastern Tech and started working at The Starter Shop before moving on to work at Cape Breton Battery from 1978-1995, at which time he, along with his partner, opened the doors of B&T Battery & Autoparts. Bill became sole owner in 2012. He reluctantly retired in 2018, but his proudest moment was being able to pass the business along to his two sons, Allan and Shaun, whom he loved so deeply and truly enjoyed spending time with. The boys also inherited their quick wit and sense of humour from Bill and will definitely pass that on to their own girls.
Bill was a true sports enthusiast. He was the star quarterback of the Cosmo Club Cobras football team and center of the Whitney Pier Raiders hockey team. He was an avid golfer and passed his knowledge of baseball on to the local youth serving as co-president of the Sydney Little League for two years. He was an absolute role model to so many.
Bill’s love for sports started at a very young age, especially football & baseball, and he instilled that into his sons which they continue to carry on.
Bill was predeceased by his parents; his sweet newborn daughter, Valerie Lynn; and his brother-in-law, Kenny Brown.
Bill is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Marj; his two sons, Allan (Jen) and Shaun (Sheryl), both of Sydney, who have the utmost reverence for their father and father-in-law; and his beautiful, kind, intelligent granddaughters to whom he was the most adoring and present Papa, Ellie, Billie, and Rosie. He rarely missed a game or event they were involved in and loved to play and share stories with the girls. He will be forever missed by them.
Bill is also survived by his sisters, Anne, Sydney, Gen (Kevin), Sydney and twins – Myrna, Sydney and Carmella (John Murphy), Florida and brothers, Gerald “Fish” (Mary), Ontario and youngest (and most handsome) brother, Dan (Sheri), Sydney. Bill had many nieces and nephews with whom he shared a deep bond and they will carry on his loving spirit. The “lily pads” will be lost without their “coach” and will also miss him dearly. Who else will serve them drinks on the warm afternoons?
A heartfelt thank you goes out to our friends, neighbours, and family who provided their loving support during this difficult time.
Visitation will take place in Sydney Memorial Chapel on Tuesday, October 11th from 4-7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at St. Theresa’s Parish, Ashby, on Wednesday, October 12th at 10:45 a.m. Interment to follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Sydney Forks.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or a charity of one’s choice.
Life is short and Bill certainly lived it to the fullest. He would always choose to “have a laugh” rather than hold a grudge and waste time that could be enjoyed with friends and family. We will continue to honor his legacy by having a shot of Goslings, hitting a few golf balls, cracking a joke, and enjoying each sunset.
