William Lionel Bill Pearman 19332022

William Lionel “Bill” Pearman
1933-2022
Pearman,
William Lionel “Bill” – Age 89, of
Wolfville, passed away November 27, 2022, peacefully at home. Born in
Wolfville on October 6, 1933, he was a son of the late Lionel and
Margaret (Green) Pearman. Bill attended school in Wolfville, and for
some years worked in Van Wart’s Hardware Store and at C.A.
Coll Supplies. He was a lifelong member of St. John’s
Anglican Church and served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Sunday School
for over 40 years. Bill was the last surviving member of his
immediate family. In addition to his parents, Bill was predeceased by
his sister, Ruth; brother, John; and also by his
brother-in-law, David Mullings. He is survived by
his nephews, Mark (Mona) and Paul Mullings; several
grandnieces and nephews; and by numerous cousins and extended family.
Bill is also survived by members of his ‘chosen’ families, including
through the years the Green’s and the Hergett’s. A
lifelong resident of Wolfville, he lived at Tideways for 40 years and
for the past 3 years with his friend, George
Estey.
Over the
past fifteen years Bill had an amazing second life thanks to his many
caregivers (with a special thanks to Linda, Janet, Penny, and Susan,
as well as Dr. Hazen Burton), but most particularly
Francis. Bill’s lifelong search for ‘a good woman’
finally came to fruition when he and Francis found each other –
surrogate father and surrogate daughter. No one could have cared more
for Bill. Thank you, Francis, for making his final years so wonderful,
as the mischievous boy he must have been came back (as testified to by
the sparkle in his eye and slightly naughty
smile).
Bill was
a modest and unassuming man who enjoyed country drives and meals at
the Big Stop. He also enjoyed Nova Scotia literature and history,
especially historic photographs of the Valley and South Shore (many
taken by his father). He was a devotee of Volkswagens, from the
earliest model of Beetle in Nova Scotia to his final Jetta. He drove
those to the South Shore for his annual vacation, following the path
of his childhood trips to the family cottage in Green
Bay.

Remarkable for his unremarkableness
and essential kindness, Bill discretely looked out for humanity and
when he saw a problem, he quietly fixed (and funded) what he could. He
was an astute investor who used the resources he generated to create
and endow the Tartan Foundation. The Tartan Foundation
allowed Bill to hold to the ideal that anonymous charity is the
highest good. His discrete gifts improved the world around him with
two decades of support of numerous Valley area charities, the funding
of Syrian refugee families, as well substantial support for the
building campaigns for L’Arche Wolfville, The Flower Cart,
and Chrysalis House.
His
concern for those in need was genuine and he had no greater pleasure
than to see the joy that resulted from his gifts as he, unseen and
unknown, watched from the sidelines. Humanity was his chief concern
and what action he could take, he did enthusiastically, and a small
part of the world is better as a
result.
