William (Bill) Finnie Kane passed away peacefully, at his home in Bowmanville, Ontario, on the afternoon of March 22, 2022, at 82 years of age.
Bill was born in the Stockbridge neighbourhood of Edinburgh, Scotland on October 18, 1939, to William and Margaret Kane (nee Finnie). His Stockbridge and Edinburgh boyhood was a frequent source of his wonderfully told stories.
On July 4th, 1959, at the age of 19 he married the love of his life Lina Nayar and 63 years later she stood at his bedside, hand in hand, as he passed.
Bill and Lina had two sons Steven and Sean. In search of greater opportunities, in December of 1967 Bill, Lina, Steven, and Sean boarded a BOAC flight to Canada to begin a brand-new life far from their beloved families and friends. A family saying emerged over the years, “We were made in Scotland, but fully assembled in Canada.” Bill became a fiercely proud Canadian, but he never forgot his deep Scottish roots.
The family eventually settled in Oshawa. While Bill’s trade was a Grate Builder (fireplaces, and fireboxes), he quickly secured a job on the cutting tables at Chrysler Canada in Ajax. Over the years he served in several capacities, including Union Steward, and Foreman, before retiring as a Production Supervisor in 1995.
Adoring Husband to Lina. Proud Father to Steven (Debbie) and Sean (Lorraine and her daughter Melissa). Loving Grandfather to Mathilda and James, who filled his heart with unbridled joy. Loyal Friend and Brother-in-Law to Shona Lewis and Ivan Nayar (Frances). More than an Uncle, to his nephew Gary Lewis (Karen) and niece Mandy Gabriel (Rob and their daughter Alyson). For Bill, family extended beyond blood, he also became Uncle Bill to dear family friends Heather Farrington (Wayne and their sons Kristopher and Michael) and Lorna Carter (John and their children Amanda and Adam). Bill (Billy to them) is survived by his five sisters Faye, Pearl, Maire (Gerry), Louise, and Frances (Trevor), as well as many nieces and nephews from both the Kane and Nayar families. William Finnie Kane was a Son, a Brother, a Husband, a Father, a Grandfather, an Uncle, and a Friend to many. He was also a man who could fix or build just about anything, a bagpipe player, a music lover, and one fine Rock ‘n’ Roll dancer.
Above all Bill Kane was a man of compassion who recognized and valued the dignity that is found in an honest day’s work.
He was loved.
If desired, memorial donations to the Canadian Mesothelioma Foundation will be greatly appreciated by the family.
