Obituary of Walter Meding
Walter, the last of the Meding brothers, died peacefully on May 7th, 2022
Walter was born in a farm house near Estuary, Sk. on February 8, 1924. He was fourth of 7 boys born to August and Olga Meding. The family moved to the Trochu district when Walter was still a toddler. The family rented farm land until they were able to buy their own homestead in 1928. It was located NE of Trochu (SE of Huxley). SE- 11-23-34. The family home and barn are still proudly standing. Walter went to Letts school (1 ½ miles south) up to grade 8 and then helped on the family farm. After his older brothers moved onto farms of their own all within the Trochu/Huxley area, Walter ended up on the original homestead. In 1949 he married Agnes Kanderka from the Ghost Pine area east of Three Hills. They farmed 4 quarters of land while raising 4 children, (Gerald, Brenda, Barbara and Vernon). In 1981, Walter retired from farming and rented out the land while continuing to live on the property. In 1988, they sold 2 quarters of land, bought a house in Trochu and moved into town. In 1993 they sold the NE quarter and 1994 the final quarter of land sold. In retirement Walter did a lot of fishing, traveling, camping, woodworking in his shop and simply enjoying life. He also loved social gatherings and playing cards, in particular crib. They loved the coffee time at the Trochu Drop in Center. Walter and Agnes lived in Trochu until Agnes’ passing in 2015. Suffering from macular degeneration, early dementia and bladder cancer, Walter moved into a senior’s home in Red Deer where he lived until his passing on the evening of May 7, 2022.
Walter was predeceased by his wife, Agnes, of 65 years.
Walter was predeceased by his brothers: Reinhold (in infancy), Albert, Art, Otto, Elmer, Harold and their wives. He is survived by sister-in-law Lila Meding of Olds.
He was predeceased by his sister-in-law Mary (Ken) Hussin. He is survived by brother-in-laws, Joe (June) Kanderka and Clarence (Millie) Kanderka.
He is lovingly remembered by his children: Gerald (Brenda), Brenda, Barbara, Vernon (Andrea). His Grandchildren: Trevor (Katie), Brad (Jessica) and Austin (Helga). His Great grandchildren: Ethan, Turner, Kassidy, Addison, Lillian, Paisley, Hazel, baby girl born 2 hours before Walter died, Madelyn, Maxtin, His extended family is large and too many to name – they all held a special place in Walter’s heart.
