Walter niuk 2022

Obituary
With great sadness, the family of the late Walter Homeniuk, beloved husband of Mary Homeniuk of Canora, SK, announce his passing at the Yorkton Regional Health Centre on April 18, 2022, at the age of 87 years.
Walter was born to Bill and Dora (nee Gulutzan) Homeniuk on November 16, 1934, in Canora, SK. As the middle son, he grew up in the Strathcona district and attended Strathcona school with his two brothers, James and Ernie. With his father and brothers, he started farming at a young age. Unfortunately, his father passed away when Walter was just 19 years old. This left Walter to continue the farming operations with his brothers.
As a young man, he met the love his life, Mary Kostishen, and they were married in 1960. Together, they moved to the farm, where Walter joined his father-in-law in a mixed farming operation that included grain and cattle. Walter and Mary welcomed their first son, Clarence, in 1961, and their second son, Calvin, in 1965.
In 1967, they decided instead of building a house on the farm they wanted to build a house in town, as Mary got a job as the cook at the Canora Hospital. During the winter months, Walter had different jobs which included working for Canora Sheet Metal, Town of Canora, Canora Weaving, and as the caretaker for the Rainbow Hall.
Walter enjoyed spending time with his boys. Weekends were often spent watching the boys play hockey, baseball, or curling. Walter was always actively involved in community sports and organizations, so seeing his sons do the same made him proud.
As Walter was an amazing dancer, many nights were spent at local dances in the community. He also enjoyed listening to the ‘Saturday Night Get Together’ and playing cards with Mary and their family and friends.
Walter and Mary treasured so many travel journeys – Hawaii, Las Vegas, Dominican, Cuba – as well as travels from one end of Canada to the other. The last hot holiday Walter got to enjoy was to Mexico to attend Calvin and Simone’s wedding.
In 2014, Walter, Calvin, and Clarence decided to rent out the land and Walter officially retired. Walter still enjoyed going out to the farm and stopped in to visit everyone during harvest.
He loved spending time with his family, especially his granddaughter, Morgan. Walter was always wanting to attend Morgan’s activities; he was her biggest cheerleader and supporter.
Remembered for his big heart and the big smile that went along with it, Walter will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Walter was predeceased by his parents, Bill and Dora Homeniuk; parents-in-law, Peter and Dora Kostishen; brothers, James and Ernie; and his sister-in-law, Noreen Kostishen.
He has left cherished memories for his beloved wife of 61 years, Mary; sons, Clarence and Calvin (Simone); granddaughters, Morgan (Rob), Sofia, and Olivia; and his sisters-in-law, Irene Homeniuk and Elsie (Albin) Zayshley; along with many nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.
In Walter’s honour, Prayers will be held at 7:00 p.m., Monday, April 25, 2022, and the Funeral Service at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 26, 2022, both from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity, Canora, SK, with Rev. Fr. Petro Tsenov officiating. Interment will follow in the Canora Cemetery, Canora, SK. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Holy Trinity or to the Canora Curling Club, as tokens of remembrance, in memory of Walter Homeniuk.
