Van Roon John February 05 1941

JOHN VAN ROON passed away at the St. Michael’s Health Centre on Thursday, March 31, 2022.

John was born on February 5, 1941, in Strijen, The Netherlands. In 1952, he emigrated to Canada with his parents and five siblings, and settled in the Iron Springs area. At age 18, he joined the RCMP and served for 26 years, mostly in the lower mainland of British Columbia, later in Lethbridge, including two years as part of the Musical Ride. After retiring, he took up farming where he never tired of cutting and baling hay, planting trees and spending time in the Quonset, which was full of auction sale finds and replacement parts, to which friends and neighbours were always welcomed. John sang with the Christian Men’s Choir and volunteered for many years at Young Offenders and thrift stores. He also loved to golf, twice scoring a hole-in-one.

He left behind everything he owned and those he loved and held most dear:

His wife of 47 years, Elvina Mae (nee Nieboer); son Ken Van Roon (Julie Barr); daughter Darcy (Wes) Dyck; grandchildren Kaitlyn (Brian) Jenkins, Courtney (Santiago) Allier, Josh Dyck and Nathan Van Roon; great-grandchildren Oakley and Hanes Jenkins; brothers and sisters Casey (Heidi) Van Roon, Peter (Wilma) Van Roon, Riet Scheffer, Audrey Kolk, Anne Wichers, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He is also survived by Elvina’s family Will Nieboer, Joyce Doumeng, Carol Nieboer, four nieces, one nephew and their families.

John was predeceased by brothers-in-law Herman Scheffer, Albert Kolk, Cyril Wichers, Dick Doumeng, Raynold Nieboer and sister-in-law Twylla Nieboer.

John loved his Lord and was ready to meet him. His favourite bible verse was John 3:16:

For God so loved the world that he

gave his one and only son,

that whoever believes in Him should

not perish, but have eternal life

Dear man, how we will miss you.

A family gathering will be held at a later date.

Our most sincere sympathies to the family and friends of Van Roon John February 05 1941..

  1. Dear ones, we’ve lost a loving man. Reading his favourite verse and knowing that he “loved his Lord and was ready to meet him” makes this loss more tolerable. His smile is etched in my mind, as is his rescuing me from our mean-spirited pony’s antics when I was a 6 year old. Praying for you, Auntie Elvina, Kenny, Darcy, and families.
