With great sadness we announce that Tom passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2022 with his loving family by his side. He is survived by his wife, Nancy; sons Doug and Dave; siblings Herb (Lynn), Beth, and Walter (Ida). He was predeceased by his sister Heather and his parents Kathleen and Holland Marr.
Tom was born in Hagersville, Ontario, and grew up as part of a close-knit community in Highland Creek. Well-suited to country living, Tom spent the last thirty years living in the hamlet of Udora. After a long career in the manufacturing field, retirement in 2011 allowed Tom to spend time on his many interests and hobbies.
Tom was a skilled machinist and craftsman, well-known among his friends as the man to see when advice or hands-on help was needed. He gave generously of his time and knowledge, spending many happy hours working in his machine shop with family and friends. Tom was most in his element designing and working on his many projects, with the radio playing in the background and a fully-stocked fridge at the ready. His projects ranged from the more practical (vehicle maintenance, equipment repair, motorcycle restoration) to the creative and artistic (steam engine design, model cannon fabrication, mailbox reinforcement).
With Tom’s affinity for custom tooling and innovative manufacturing techniques, every new project was deemed an experiment. Many joint ventures occurred with other local craftsmen as well as with his engineer sons, leading Tom to deem the shop ‘T. Marr and Sons Laboratories’. Tom felt that all projects, big or small, should be completed to the highest quality. Nothing was impossible, given adequate time and materials.
In 1987 Tom bought his dream motorcycle, a 1940 Indian Chief. He spent the next few years restoring it to its original condition. In 1990, a long-anticipated bike trip with friends took him to Sturgis, South Dakota for the 50th Anniversary of the Black Hills Motor Classic and the annual Indian Motorcycle Convention. The year 1990 was special to Tom for another reason – it marked the birth of his twin sons, Doug and Dave, who now carry on the motorcycling tradition.
Tom’s idea of travelling often meant packing his sleeping bag and tent on his bike and heading out with little more than a change of clothes. When Doug and Dave came on the scene, the whole family enjoyed travelling across Canada by RV to visit family and friends, as well as camping throughout Ontario and the US. Tom continued to enjoy regular motorcycle trips with friends to Daytona Beach, Port Dover, and Ontario cottage country.
From motorcycle and camping adventures throughout Canada and the United States, to hosting backyard corn roasts and get-togethers at the family cottage, Tom enjoyed bringing people together to have a good time.
Loving husband, proud father, fun-loving brother, Tom leaves behind a legacy of friendship, generosity, and kindness. He will be dearly missed.
A Celebration of his life will take place at a later date.
