We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Thomas Ronald (Ron) Coleman on August 25th 2022. Ron passed away peacefully after a brief illness in the care of Hospice Cape Breton in Membertou.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the only son of the late Anne (Consolo) Coleman. A graduate of Saint Francis Xavier University, he obtained his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) , Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) and Master of Education (M.A.) from the institution. He was very fond of his time spent there and a proud supporter of the university. His years in education allowed him to teach and impart his knowledge in Glace Bay, Halifax, Montreal and Eskasoni.
An avid sportsman, he enjoyed watching horse racing, playing hockey, baseball and golf. He was a member of the Midget McKeen Street baseball team in Glace Bay and later played for the Universal Nine, the Glace Bay Antonians and Reserve baseball teams. His passion for hockey was lifelong and he was honoured to become a member of the Xavier Junior College team. His commitment to the game continued as a coach of the Saint Michael’s High School hockey team amongst others. Recreational skating became a lifelong past time he enjoyed well into his 80’s. A faithful fan of the Montreal Canadians; he loved every game he attended at the Montreal Forum.
A man of great faith, he was a parishioner of Saint Mary’s Parish in East Bay and devoted to his duties as a server and lector at daily mass. A member of the Knights of Columbus, he recently received a long service award for his 41 years as Fourth Degree Knight.
Ron is survived by his daughters Kelly Coleman, Kelowna, British Columbia and Rhonda McIntosh (Jodi), Cochrane, Alberta; daughter-in-law April (Flor) Coleman and beloved grandson Ryan Francis Coleman; San Diego, California. He is further survived by many MacLellan relatives in New Waterford and abroad. His special grand-dog LJ also brought him great joy. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 62 years Ann (MacLellan) Coleman, son Sean Coleman, grandfather George Consolo, grandmother Gabrielle (Martin) Consolo, aunt(s) Georgina, Mary and Pearl Consolo and uncles Leo and Tommy (Loretta) Consolo.
Special thanks to Dr. Brendan McCarville and staff on floor 4B of the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Dr. Ann Francis D’Intino and staff of the Cape Breton Hospice Membertou, and his family doctor, Dr. Susan Macleod for providing him excellent medical care.
To the community of friends and neighbors who cared for Ron after his wife and son’s passing in 2020; your kindness will not be forgotten.
A service will be held in July 2023 to honor Ron, Ann and Sean. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton County. Cremation has taken place and sincere thanks to McLellan Brother’s Funeral Home for their compassionate service and professionalism.
The last of his Sicilian line, “Casa quantu stai e tirrinu quantu viri.’ Translates as “Home for as long as you need to be, and land as far as the eye can see.” May his place in heaven bring him comfort.
