Thomas Francis Carroll Friday April 8th 2022

Carroll, Thomas –
Thomas Carroll passed away on Friday, April 8, 2022 following a long battle with cancer.
Tom was a friendly sort with a quick smile, well-developed sense of humour and a charm that put people at ease. He was devoted to his family and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren. He established numerous longstanding friendships in both his personal and professional life.
He was born in Dublin, Ireland in 1935, one of six sons to parents William and Esther. He had strong relationships with his brothers John, Tony, Fred, Frank and Raymond.
In March of 1957 he immigrated to Canada, eventually landing a job with Pat O’Connor Transport. This was also the time he met another Toronto Dubliner, his beloved Maureen. While they had not met in Ireland, they did take the same bus route in Dublin. An old friend of Maureen’s, who happened to be married to Tom’s brother John, introduced them. The pair quickly became inseparable, spending time in their new city with Morris and Eileen Dineen and Arthur and Anne Whitehead, couples who would become lifelong friends.
They were married a short time later and had three children. Steve, married to Bonnie and parents of Aidan (Indhia) and Mackenzie. Terri, married to Pat and parents of Brendan (Alicia), Conor and Siobhan (Artur), and Dave, married to Karen and parents of Jack and Evan.
Tom was proud of his family and delighted in hearing of the adventures of his nieces, nephews and grandchildren.
With his working life, Tom started his Canadian career as a truck driver and participated in Toronto’s rapidly expanding construction in the 60’s. He eventually moved into the office as an accounts manager where he would spend the majority of his working life. He opened Albion Sand and Gravel in the 70s with good friends Ted and Ray, running it for two decades. He ended his career with U-Pak, another O’Connor family enterprise and another place where he had a lasting impact.
Tom had a positive influence on the numerous people he met in his career, as a soccer player and as a man who enjoyed a pint at the pub with his pals.
His favourite times were the many gatherings with family and friends, especially the ones around the holidays. A 1998 reunion with all of his brothers in Brampton, ON being at the top of his list of favourite moments.
He loved sport, especially his Maple Leafs, golf (getting in as many rounds as he could manage) and soccer of all types. A chance meeting with Sir Stanley Matthews in the 80s was a soccer fan highlight for him.
In his final months, Tom received excellent care from the Elliott Community in Guelph. Very popular with the healthcare staff, he continued to make friends and used his Irish charm to its fullest.
In lieu of flowers, Tom would have appreciated donations to The Elliott Community or Sickkids Foundation. Donations can be made by cash or cheque at the funeral home or online following the link below.
A Celebration of Tom’s life will take place at a later date this summer.
